What do homeowners really want from low-carbon heating? 🏠

A recent Nesta study asked 7,000 people across Britain about their attitudes towards heat pumps and low-carbon heating.

Cost, comfort and reliability came through strongly. Homeowners also wanted to understand the full installation upfront, feel confident the technology would work in their property, and have more control over how energy is used at home.

The research focused on heat pumps, but many of those questions will feel familiar to anyone considering moving away from gas, oil or LPG.

Our Engineering Director, Chris Carver, has been featured in the Energy Institute’s New Energy World, exploring the engineering behind the tepeo ZEB and the role could play in decarbonising UK heating.

The ZEB heat battery boiler stores 40kWh of thermal energy in a ceramic core, while predictive software helps it charge when electricity is cheaper, greener and more abundant.

That means heat batteries can decouple electricity demand from heat demand - giving homes heat when they need it, without necessarily adding to peak grid demand. As heating becomes increasingly electrified, that kind of flexibility will matter more and more.

Kevin’s home is a great example of what can happen when you look at heating as part of a wider energy setup. 🌱

With solar, EV charging, air-to-air heat pumps and smart energy monitoring already in place, Kevin had made significant progress reducing his reliance on gas - including cutting his gas consumption by 65%.

But he wanted to go one step further: the ZEB became the final piece that allowed him to disconnect from gas completely.

Kevin discovered tepeo through Eco Matters in the Maidenhead Advertiser and, just four months later, had his ZEB installed.

Kevin admits he enjoys checking his apps to see how much he’s saving. On his current 4p/kWh off-peak tariff, he calculates that a full 40kWh ZEB charge costs a maximum of just £1.60.

At tepeo, our mission is to help reduce the carbon emissions associated with heating UK homes. But as we grow, we also need to look closely at the environmental impact of our own operations.

In 2025, 100% of waste collected from our Wokingham HQ and production facility was diverted from landfill, and we’ve maintained that rate so far in 2026.

For Recycle Week, we’re sharing a closer look at what happens behind the scenes - from materials left over during ZEB production to the way key components can be recovered and reused at the end of a unit’s life.

It’s one part of a much bigger challenge: growing responsibly while helping more homes move away from fossil-fuel heating.

Sustainability shouldn’t stop with the technology we create.

At tepeo, we’re working to reduce the carbon emissions associated with heating UK homes - but we also think carefully about the impact of how we operate.

In 2025, 100% of waste from our site was kept out of landfill, with a 69% recycling rate. We’ve continued that progress into 2026, while also designing the ZEB with end-of-life recyclability in mind.

For Anna and Gary, choosing a new heating system was about more than replacing what they had - it was about preparing their home for the future.

With limited outdoor space, a heat pump wasn’t the right fit for their three-bedroom home in Thame, so they chose a tepeo ZEB heat battery boiler.
