Good advice from Richard here:

Thinking of sowing a new lawn this spring? Before you reach for the seed, take a step back and ask yourself… why did your last lawn decline? 🤔

There’s no point starting fresh if the underlying issues haven’t been addressed. Common problems include shade, waterlogging, soil compaction, using the wrong grass type, too much wear and tear, or simply poor maintenance like incorrect mowing and feeding.

Once you’ve tackled those, you’re ready to start again - properly. ✅

✔️ Choose the right grass seed for your lawn and conditions
✔️ Prepare a fine, firm seedbed
✔️ Improve your soil if needed—especially if it’s heavy clay or uneven
✔️ Carry out work between March and September for best results
✔️ Apply seed at the correct rate (35–50g/m²)
✔️ Rake in well to maximise seed-to-soil contact
✔️ Lightly roll to firm everything in

For the best chance of success, consider covering with a germination fleece, this helps retain moisture, protect from pests, and keep warmth in the soil. 🌡️

Keep the area consistently watered until germination, and once your grass reaches around 3–4cm, give it its first cut using a rotary mower on a high setting with sharp blades. ✂️

Get it right from the start, and you’ll set the foundation for a strong, healthy lawn all season long 💚

We've been talking about these creatures quite a lot lately, and that's because their 'work' causes gardeners a great deal of distress round about this time of year.

These are leatherjackets, the larval stage in the life cycle of crane flies (aka Daddy Long Legs), Flies have maggots, butterflies have caterpillars and Daddy Long Legs' have leatherjackets.

They're hardly cute are they, but we're not here to judge any creature on its looks - it's what they can do to a lawn that worries us. Those incredibly intricate jaws can munch through grass roots like there's no tomorrow - and - to be fair - once the roots have been destroyed, there really is no tomorrow for the plant.

Now - a smattering of leather jackets in a lawn is not something to panic about. It's biodiversity in action and that's a good thing. However, an infestation of these wee beasties WILL destroy a beautiful lawn.

So if you're noticing any of these on or around your lawn, if your grass is looking poorly or if you're seeing lots of birds hopping around feasting on your lawn - the time to take action is NOW.

Call your local UKLCA lawn specialist for help with controlling leatherjacket populations and repairing any damage they may have inflicted.
