We’re delighted to announce that planning permission and Listed Building Consent has been granted for a contemporary, low-impact extension to a Grade II listed cottage within a Conservation Area in Hampshire.

The extension has been designed as a contemporary addition that complements the historic cottage. With its low-profile flat roof, zinc cladding, and contemporary glazing, the design creates a clear architectural distinction while respecting the character and significance of the listed building.

The carefully considered materials, colour palette, and low-profile design allow the extension to blend into the surrounding landscape, creating a subtle, harmonious relationship between old and new.

We’re particularly pleased that both the Conservation and Planning Officers unanimously supported the proposal, recognising the scheme as sensitive, low-impact and high-quality design.

We’re now looking forward to progressing the project through the technical design stage and into construction.

Pleased to share this time-lapse video capturing the transformation of a derelict timber-framed house into a contemporary, sustainable new-build home within the Old Bursledon Conservation Area, Hampshire. We designed and delivered this proejct for our clients recently.

The architecture reinterprets traditional forms found throughout Old Bursledon, resulting in a design that feels both timeless and contemporary. A carefully integrated basement provides additional living space while maintaining a low visual impact on the surrounding landscape, and cleverly maximises the potential of the development within strict planning constraints.

Designed with the sensitive context and environmental impact in mind, this courtyard house features a tranquil rainwater harvesting pond at its heart—supporting sustainable water management while creating a calm, central outdoor courtyard space.

Sustainability is embedded throughout the project, with features including air source heat pumps, Passivhaus building fabric principles, high levels of insulation, biodiversity, and thoughtfully landscaped gardens that promote wildlife and support the local ecosystem.

A fantastic example of how modern design can sit sensitively within a conservation area setting while delivering high-performance, future-ready homes.

We are pleased to share the recent completion of this residential extension scheme near Farnham, located adjacent to the stunning Alice Holt ancient woodland.

With permitted development, we were able to extend and reconfigure this 131m2 house to create a 246m2 contemporary family home of exceptional finish and quality. Simple & sympathetic additions to the sides and rear, and a few clever modifications to the existing floor plan, enabled us to increase the internal floor area by 87% while maintaining the charm of this property and it’s views to the woodland & countryside setting.

At Giles Architects, we embrace fresh ideas in landscape-led design.

Recently, we've teamed up with the fantastic Clayworks Natural Plasters to craft a stunning bespoke exterior finish that reflects the unique physical, historical, and geological traits of each site.

Through thoughtful exploration of texture and color, we’ve achieved an exceptional terracotta finish that beautifully interacts with light and shadow while honoring the site's heritage.

This early concept sketch explores a new-build home shaped by its landscape and inspired by its unique heritage. At this stage, ideas are fluid—tested, challenged and refined by hand.

Sketching remains a vital part of our process. It allows us to think freely, respond instinctively to place, and shape an architecture that feels grounded and authentic.

Great to see construction works beginning on site at our latest new-build home in a conservation area in Alresford 🏡

This project transforms a historic cycle shop in the heart of the town into a contemporary dwelling, carefully designed to respect the site’s heritage and preserve the character of the conservation area.

Key elements of the site’s history are being preserved and celebrated. The original boundary wall is being carefully retained and restored, while a new flint wall has been introduced to complement the existing fabric.

A large, workshop-style timber door has been reinterpreted as a modern feature, offering a contemporary take on the historic entrance. The new standing seam metal roof nods to the original cycle shop’s industrial past, blending old and new. The roof terrace will feature bespoke solar shading and privacy screening, crafted from perforated metal with a pattern inspired by the Alresford crest.

Thank you to our fantastic clients, and well done to Project Architect Caroline Sait, whose hard work to date has helped shape a fantastic design and a truly exciting project.

Exciting progress on a significant residential extension project in Wi******er 📍

Working closely with our clients, we’ve significantly increased the size of the property to help create a truly exceptional family home. With large windows, high ceilings, and a much-improved internal flow, the transformation is already taking shape as construction moves forward.

Great to see the design coming to life on site — we’re looking forward to sharing further updates as the project progresses.
