At AR, there are few moments on a project quite like seeing the scaffolding come down on one of our projects.

While there is still a lot of work to do, it is the first time you can truly see the building as intended: its proportions, materials, uninterrupted views, and how all the elements come together.

After months of drawings, decisions, and construction, it is incredibly rewarding to see the design emerge. The finishing touches are still to come, but the vision is finally becoming a reality.

There’s something incredibly exciting about seeing a house take shape after spending the last 18 months developing it on paper.

Plans, sections, details and countless conversations suddenly become something tangible, you can finally experience the scale, proportions and volumes that have been living in your head for so long.

One of the most rewarding parts of being an architect.

Modern architecture is often associated with clean lines, large areas of glass and a restrained material palette. But contemporary design doesn’t have to mean cold or minimal.

This weeks Blog discusses the way we use

COST CUTTING vs VALUE ENGINEERING

They sound similar. They’re not.

Cost cutting = spending less.
Often by removing elements, reducing quality or choosing the cheapest option.

Value engineering = making your budget work harder.
Finding smarter ways to achieve the same design intent without compromising quality.

This could mean:

✔️ Alternative materials with a similar look
✔️ Simplifying structural elements
✔️ Streamlining layouts
✔️ Spending more where it has the biggest impact

The key difference?

⭐ Cost cutting asks: “How can we spend less?”
⭐ Value engineering asks: “How can we achieve the same result more efficiently?”

Good architecture isn’t about spending the most.

It’s about making every pound count

FOLDING HOUSE

Folding House is a home shaped by its landscape.

Embedded into the hillside, the design follows the natural gradient of the site, taking its cues from an existing zig-zag pathway and unfolding towards the River Avon.

Material, movement and outlook are central to the design. Solid timber volumes create moments of privacy, while open-plan spaces and generous balconies connect the home to its expansive surroundings.

It’s a project about working with the landscape rather than against it — creating a home that feels considered, connected and naturally part of its setting.

Thoughtful architecture begins with understanding place.
If you’re planning a project that values connection to the site we’d love to hear from you.

The heart of the home, AR kitchens are designed to be social.

We work with local, award-winning kitchen designers to bring the architectural vision into the detail, creating kitchens that are considered, personal and designed around how you live.

Because the kitchen is a critical part of your home, not an afterthought.

The best kitchens are designed around the people who use them.
