As we celebrate 15 years of Adam Knibb Architects, we're revisiting 15 projects that have helped define our journey. The eleventh in our series is Surrey House — a project that proves great architecture doesn't always have to shout to make a lasting impression.

Unlike some of the more challenging or award-winning projects we've featured, Surrey House is one that quietly resonates with people. Time and again, prospective clients refer to it as a home they admire and a way of living they aspire to. For us, that's one of the highest compliments an architect can receive.

The design transforms a traditional house through a contemporary timber extension that brings together kitchen, dining and living spaces, creating a home that feels light, connected and effortlessly functional. The careful use of natural materials, generous glazing and strong links to the garden demonstrate how thoughtful design can enhance everyday family life without unnecessary complexity.

Looking back, Surrey House reminds us that successful architecture is measured not by how dramatic it is, but by how well it supports the people who live there. Sometimes the projects that leave the biggest impression are those that simply feel right.

15 Years | 15 Favourite Projects | #10 Waldens Farm

As we celebrate 15 years of Adam Knibb Architects, we're revisiting 15 projects that have helped define our journey. The tenth in our series is Waldens Farm — a project that reminds us that the best architecture begins with listening.

From the outset, this was never about creating a house that could exist anywhere. Working closely with our clients, we explored their aspirations, how they wanted to live and their deep connection to the surrounding landscape. The design evolved through conversation, testing ideas and refining a vision that was uniquely theirs.

The result is a contemporary home that sits comfortably within its rural setting, responding to the topography, views and changing seasons. Carefully considered materials, generous glazing and thoughtfully composed spaces create a strong relationship between inside and out, allowing the landscape to become part of everyday life.

For us, Waldens Farm is a reminder that great architecture is rarely the product of a single idea. It emerges through collaboration — between client, architect, site and landscape—to create a home that feels both distinctive and deeply personal.

As we celebrate 15 years of Adam Knibb Architects, we're revisiting 15 projects that have helped define our journey. The ninth in our series is Semaphore House — a project that highlights the importance of thoughtful intervention when working with our built heritage.

Designing for a Grade II listed building brings a unique responsibility. Every decision must respect the character and history of the existing architecture while ensuring the home can continue to meet the needs of modern life. At Semaphore House, our approach was to create a sensitive contemporary addition that complements rather than competes with the original building, allowing old and new to work together as a cohesive whole.

The result is a home that retains its historic identity while offering light-filled, functional spaces for everyday living. Rather than imitating the past, the new architecture is honest in its expression, carefully detailed and designed to enhance the qualities that made the building special in the first place.

Looking back, Semaphore House reminds us that the best heritage projects are not about preserving buildings in time — they are about helping them evolve with care, ensuring they remain relevant and loved for generations to come.

Charlie’s Next Chapter

After two fantastic years with Adam Knibb Architects, we’ll be saying goodbye to Charlie McManus at the end of August as he heads back to university to continue his architectural studies.

Charlie joined us as a Part I Architectural Assistant and has become a valued member of the AKA team, contributing creativity, enthusiasm and a thoughtful approach to our projects.

We’re particularly proud that Charlie has secured a place at The Bartlett School of Architecture, UCL, to undertake his Part 2. Widely regarded as one of the world’s leading architecture schools, a place at The Bartlett is highly competitive and a fantastic achievement.

It has been a pleasure watching Charlie develop as a designer over the past two years, and we’re excited to see what comes next for him.

Congratulations Charlie — and best of luck for the next chapter!

15 Years | 15 Favourite Projects | #8 Petersfield House

As we celebrate 15 years of Adam Knibb Architects, we're revisiting 15 projects that have helped define our journey. The eighth in our series is Petersfield House—a project that demonstrates how contemporary architecture can respect tradition while confidently looking to the future.

Situated within the conservation area of the market town of Petersfield and the South Downs National Park, the brief was to create a contemporary family home that would enhance its setting rather than compete with it. The design draws inspiration from the area's Arts & Crafts heritage, reinterpreting familiar proportions and materials in a modern architectural language.

Inside, generous open-plan living spaces are balanced with quieter, more intimate rooms, while a dramatic double-height entrance and floating staircase create a memorable sense of arrival. Externally, Hampshire stock brick forms a solid base, with timber, zinc and extensive glazing wrapping the upper level to create a layered composition that feels both distinctive and rooted in its context.

Looking back, Petersfield House reminds us that architecture doesn't have to imitate the past to respect it. The most successful buildings understand the character of their surroundings and reinterpret it in a way that is relevant for today and resilient for tomorrow.

Kimbridge Farmhouse | Completed

Located in the picturesque village of Kimbridge on the River Test, this seven-bedroom farmhouse has been carefully refurbished to create a luxury destination for guests enjoying one of Hampshire's most celebrated landscapes.

The project focused on transforming the home's principal living spaces, opening up the kitchen, dining and lounge to form a spacious, light-filled interior designed for modern living and entertaining.

Working in collaboration with the owner, we also developed a cohesive interior design scheme, selecting high-quality fixtures, fittings and finishes to deliver a calm, elegant aesthetic throughout.

We're pleased to share the completed project, captured in a new series of photographs that showcase both the architecture and interiors.

15 Years | 15 Favourite Projects | #7 Tarn Moor

As we celebrate 15 years of Adam Knibb Architects, we're revisiting 15 projects that have helped define our journey. The seventh in our series is Tarn Moor — a project that embodies our belief that sustainability should be fundamental to great architecture, not an afterthought.

Designed for a climate scientist in the Surrey countryside, the brief challenged us to create a home that would minimise its environmental impact while celebrating its remarkable setting. Every decision was guided by that ambition: from a predominantly timber structure and innovative low-carbon foundations to the reuse of materials, renewable energy technologies and a design that sits lightly within the landscape.

The dramatic butterfly roof frames expansive views across the site while flooding the living spaces with natural light, proving that environmental performance and architectural expression can work hand in hand. The project went on to receive industry recognition, including the Structural Timber Award for Low Energy Project of the Year, an accolade that reflected the collaborative effort to push sustainable design further.

Looking back, Tarn Moor reminds us that the most sustainable buildings are not defined by a single technology or material — they are the result of hundreds of thoughtful decisions, all working together to create architecture that benefits both people and the planet.

Shortlisted for Home Extension of the Year!

We’re thrilled to share that Cakeham House has been shortlisted in the Home Extension of the Year (Up to 2,500 sq ft) category at the 2026 British Homes Awards.

A fantastic recognition of the design, sustainability and collaboration behind this West Wittering transformation.

15 Years | 15 Favourite Projects | #6 Gatti House

As we celebrate 15 years of Adam Knibb Architects, we're revisiting 15 projects that have helped define our journey. The sixth in our series is Gatti House — a project that demonstrates how a contemporary intervention can breathe new life into a historic home.

Set within a rural Hampshire, the brief was to create a flexible two-storey extension for modern family living while respecting the character of the existing building. The design opens up the home with a new dining space and reconfigured kitchen, carefully positioned to maximise natural light and frame views of the surrounding landscape. Vertical timber fins, generous glazing and a restrained palette give the extension a contemporary identity while allowing it to sit comfortably alongside its historic neighbour.

One of our favourite details is the dual-facing fireplace that connects the new dining space with the existing snug — a simple gesture that physically and emotionally links old and new, creating a home that feels cohesive rather than divided.

Looking back, Gatti House reminds us that the best extensions don't compete with the buildings they join. They reveal new possibilities, strengthening what already exists while creating spaces that feel as though they've always belonged.
