ADAM Partner George Saumarez Smith's 1860's Wi******er home has been featured in The Observer UK's recent article 'In Hampshire, an architect’s Victorian home patiently unfurls'. In this piece, George reflects on bringing his home back to life, his passion for drawing and the enduring appeal of traditional design.

"While much of Saumarez Smith’s work is grounded in classicism, his approach has evolved, he says, to be, “more heart than head”. It’s this emotive quality that has given rise to his latest book, The Romance of Classicism, a survey of his architectural philosophy, explored through 12 country-house projects."

We are pleased to see the submission of the outline planning application for Highflyer Farm North, the final phase of the North Ely urban extension.

ADAM Partner Robbie Kerr and team worked with the Church Commissioners for England and the wider consultant team to develop the urban design and master planning proposals.

The proposals include around 1600 new homes (30% affordable), employment space, community allotments, an extension to Ely Country Park, and a connected network of green infrastructure, helping to complete Ely's planned northern expansion.

ADAM Partner George Saumarez Smith's upcoming publication 'The Romance of Classicism' has been featured in the Financial Times recent article 'The brand-new country house'.

"The Romance of Classicism, a new book by architect George Saumarez Smith, is a love letter to the country house. It features a series of stately, elegant homes that have seemingly sat in their landscape for centuries: in red brick or creamy Portland or Bath stone, with colonnaded porticos and arched doorways, surrounded by topiary-edged lawns and rolling English countryside."

We are widely recognised for the sensitive restoration, adaptation and extension of historic buildings, including Grade I-listed properties.

Here is a restoration of a Grade I-listed home, located on a historic residential street in a leafy suburb of southwest London. The owners, a young family, initially commissioned the renowned interior designer Sims Hilditch to undertake a redecoration project. Once it became apparent that there was an opportunity for a more extensive collaboration, ADAM Partner Darren Price was appointed to support an interior transformation.

ADAM Partner George Saumarez Smith, alongside Director of Connect Architecture Matthew Wardell, provides insider advice on working with an architect, featured in The English Home's new September issue.

"A successful project is not just built around the client and the architect; there needs to be a whole team in place in which everyone is focused on delivering the best possible result. When you can build this culture around a project, the results can be extraordinary."

As featured in The English Home's new September issue, ADAM Partner Hugh Petter has contributed his advice for an article on selecting the right windows and doors, whether for a period home, new build or extension. When replacing windows, he explains the importance of size, proportion and detailing, ensuring these characteristics speak the same architectural language.

"...the windows of an elevation are rather like the eyes in a human face. We are instinctively drawn to the eyes when we meet someone, just as we are drawn to the windows of a house."
