From tired old concrete to a patio they’ve waited over 8 years for.🤝
This one is a project I’m genuinely immensely proud of.
The existing patio was a tired, heavily weathered concrete pad that had seen better days. The clients had wanted a proper porcelain patio for around 8 years, but had repeatedly been told it couldn’t be done without serious logistics and access issues. One contractor even quoting a crane hire to lift a digger and crusher over the house with also a permit to close off the street 🤯
The biggest challenge was access. Everything had to come through the house, so careful planning, protection and a lot of hard graft were needed throughout the project.
We also extended the existing patio by a further 700mm. For the new section, we installed a geotextile membrane followed by 150mm of Type 1 MOT, fully compacted and prepared before continuing with the paving.
For the existing concrete, the slab was thoroughly cleaned and treated, with obvious low spots corrected using self-levelling compound and then a full SBR coat before the paving works began.
The porcelain was then installed using a full 40mm mortar bed system. Each area was individually primed before laying, with the bonding slurry applied to the underside of each flag. Monster Mesh was integrated into the wet mortar bed to provide additional reinforcement, before each flag was carefully bedded down and levelled using 3mm self-levelling clips. We also decided during installation to finish off the end of the patio with a lovely charcoal border to match the aesthetic of the windows and bifold doors.
It just compliments everything so well and makes the property even more stunning.
The finished patio was then jointed using charcoal Flowpoint, with the perimeter around the building sealed with black silicone to finish everything off.
And the end result speaks for itself.
A completely transformed space, a clean modern porcelain patio and, most importantly, a job the clients were told couldn’t be done without major logistical headaches.
The clients themselves were absolutely spot on throughout, even kind enough to let me have dinner with them one night while we were working late trying to get it finished for their deadline and it’s been a pleasure taking this project on and to deliver what it is today.
Now they can finally relax and enjoy the patio they’ve been waiting over 8 years for.
I’ll definitely be back in the future to carry out further works in the garden, so this isn’t the last we’ll see of this one. 🥰
