☀️ 15 YEARS WITHOUT A PROPER CLEAN… LOOK AT THE DIFFERENCE! ⚡️📈

Today we professionally cleaned a set of solar panels that have been installed for nearly 15 years — and the figures afterwards were certainly interesting.

⚡ Previous 24 HOURS: 3.5 kWh generated

We then thoroughly cleaned the panels, removing years of accumulated dirt, grime and environmental build-up.

By the time I had finished the clean later that afternoon, the system was already showing:

⚡ 6.7 kWh generated that day

So despite only completing the job late in the afternoon, the panels had already generated considerably more energy than they had managed during the entire previous 24-hour period.

That’s certainly a result worth seeing! ☀️🙌

Of course, solar generation varies considerably depending on sunshine, cloud cover, temperature and other conditions, so it wouldn’t be fair to suggest the clean alone was responsible for the entire difference.

What it does demonstrate, though, is why panels that have spent 15 years exposed to dirt, algae, bird mess and general grime can be well worth having professionally cleaned.

Rain might rinse your panels — but it doesn’t necessarily clean them.

If yours have been sitting up there untouched for years, perhaps it’s time to give them some attention. ☀️🧽

Gutters unblocked again in Standish. Same old culprit, the internal corner and poorly installed valley causing it to block up and overflow. You might also notice it’s not even clipped up properly.

🐭 Pest control isn’t just about putting traps down…

These photos are a really good example of why following your pest controller’s advice and giving them as much information as possible is so important.

When we’re investigating a pest problem, we may ask you to check cupboards, move furniture, look through stored food, inspect rooms that don’t appear to have any activity, or tell us about anything unusual you’ve noticed.

There’s a reason for it.

On this particular job, the room pictured (under stairs storage) was never mentioned as an area of concern and initially wasn’t part of the investigation. Yet once the carpet was lifted and the area properly inspected, we discovered a significant gap providing mice with access into the property.

More importantly, from here they could gain access to areas where food was available, helping to sustain the infestation.

Something as small as the gap shown in these photographs can be the difference between repeatedly treating the symptoms and actually finding and dealing with the root cause.

A good pest controller needs to understand the whole property—not just the room where you happen to see the pest.

So if we ask you to:

• Check every cupboard and stored food item
• Look behind or underneath furniture and appliances
• Inspect rooms where you haven’t noticed activity
• Tell us about previous building work, holes, gaps or damaged flooring
• Keep food securely stored and follow housekeeping advice
• Report any new sightings, noises or droppings

…please do it. What seems completely unrelated may be the missing piece of the puzzle.

The quicker we can identify where pests are entering, what they’re feeding on and where they’re travelling, the quicker we can get the problem under control.

🔨 NEW ROOF… SAME OLD PROBLEMS! 🏠

You’d be surprised how much of our diary is filled putting right work that shouldn’t need putting right in the first place.

These photos are from properties where previous roofing/guttering work has left us dealing with the consequences.

Blocked and poorly detailed valleys, excessive moss and debris build-up, badly positioned guttering, questionable joints and outlets, and water simply not being managed properly.

A new or replacement roof and guttering system is a significant investment. Unfortunately, “new” doesn’t always mean “done properly.”

We regularly get called out because homeowners are experiencing overflowing gutters, damp patches, water running down brickwork or persistent leaks—only to find the problem comes back to poor detailing or workmanship around the roofline.

Sometimes the repair itself isn’t particularly complicated. The frustrating part is that the customer has already paid somebody to do the job once.

At Standish Property Maintenance & Pest Control, we’re happy to investigate roofline and guttering problems, clean out valleys and gutters, identify obvious defects and carry out appropriate repairs where possible.

Very pleased to be able to give something back to Standish Cricket Club after they helped me when I was starting up 15 years ago. The new clubhouse is looking amazing and the ground even better with the advertising boards around the boundary.

🐝 WASP NEST – IN A LOFT 🐝

This was a substantial wasp nest tucked away in the eaves of a loft, in a particularly awkward position to access safely, and the second one in a week that another pest controller hasn’t managed to do.

In this video you can see the three-stage approach I use to deal with a nest like this:

1️⃣ Initial knockdown with insecticidal foam
The first stage is applying a specialist wasp nest foam directly onto and around the nest. This gives a rapid knockdown and helps deal with active wasps around the treatment area, reducing the risk of wasps flying towards me while I’m working in the confined loft space.

2️⃣ Physically breaking up the nest
Once the initial activity has been reduced, I use a long-reach pole to break up and disrupt the nest from a safer distance. This exposes the internal structure of the nest and areas that would otherwise be difficult to reach.

3️⃣ Residual insecticidal powder treatment
Finally, the area is treated with an appropriate insecticidal powder. Unlike the initial knockdown treatment, the powder provides a much longer residual effect, remaining in the treated area after I’ve left and helping control returning wasps that weren’t present during the initial treatment.

It’s a good example of why treating a wasp nest isn’t always simply a case of spraying something at the entrance and walking away — particularly when the nest is large, concealed and located in a difficult area such as a loft.

🐝 WASP NEST REMOVAL – RIGHT IN THE EAVES! 🐝

This one was tucked away in a loft, right down in the eaves of the roof just behind the gutter line — not the easiest place to get to!

With a nest in an awkward position like this, simply spraying the entrance isn’t always enough, so this one got a three-stage treatment:

💨 First, the nest was treated thoroughly with a wasp nest destroyer foam insecticide.

💥 Once the treatment had taken effect, I used a long pole from a safe distance to physically break up and disrupt the nest.

🌫️ Finally, the area was treated with an insecticidal powder to deal with any remaining or returning wasps and make sure the job was finished properly.

The video gives you a good look at just how well hidden these nests can be in a roof space!

⚠️ Wasp nests can become extremely defensive when disturbed, so don’t attempt to knock down or break up an active nest yourself.
