It's been a really busy year for moles so far!

The molehills in this customer's lawn were very close to the hedge - a pattern is common after hot, dry weather like we've had this summer, as the moles seek out the cooler damper soil, which has more of their food (earthworms and larvae), provided by the shelter of the hedge. Ed set a trap and will be back to see if the mole has been caught next week. We're confident we will catch it, but if we don't, we won't charge!

We were called to deal with a wasp nest in an electrical substation in Mawdsley on Tuesday. Inspection revealed that the nest was not actually of the common wasp (Vespula vulgaris), but contained European hornets (Vespa crabro), the largest social wasp native to this country.
European hornets are relatively rare in the North West of England, but sightings have increased over recent years. Like common wasps, European hornets are venomous and build their nests from paper-like material created by chewing decaying wood, young tree bark and plant material. The hexagonal cells are where the queen hornet lays her eggs and larvae develop.
We treated the nest with insecticide to avoid potential attacks on staff attending the site who could accidentally disturb the nest.
