Choosing the right door entry system for your building

Not all door entry systems do the same job, and picking the wrong one usually shows up later as a security gap or a daily annoyance.

If budget is tight, an audio door entry kit gives you two way speech and door release paired with an electric lock. It's a solid option for both homes and businesses where cost matters most.

Want to see who's at the door, not just hear them? Video door entry systems let you view, hear and speak to visitors before letting them in, and they can be combined with keypads or proximity readers for staff and residents who need a quicker way in.

For higher security sites, biometric systems using fingerprint recognition are worth a look, and gyms in particular often do well with networked options like Paxton Net2 or SALTO.

Which of these fits your building, and does your current setup actually match the level of security you need?

CCTV: your quiet partner in health and safety compliance

CCTV does more than catch intruders. It backs up your health and safety record, giving you real footage for incident reviews, insurance claims, and compliance checks under regulations like BSEN13637.

If an accident happens on site, timestamped footage shows exactly what led to it. That matters when you're reporting to HSE or defending a claim.

It also helps with day-to-day monitoring: spotting blocked fire exits, unsafe stacking, or near-misses before they become something worse.

A few things worth asking before you install or upgrade a system:

Which areas actually need coverage, and for how long should footage be stored?
Is your setup GDPR compliant, especially around staff and visitor privacy?
Are your cameras and recorders getting regular servicing, or just left running until something fails?

Our engineers carry out full system health checks, including firmware updates, so footage quality and compliance stay solid year-round. When did you last have your CCTV system serviced?

A working alarm cuts your break-in risk. Here's the proof

A well-fitted, monitored intruder alarm genuinely lowers your chances of being burgled. That's not a sales line, it's what the evidence shows year after year.

But an alarm on its own isn't always enough, especially in areas with higher levels of break-ins. That's where perimeter security earns its keep.

Think anti-climb wall spikes to stop people scaling fences, security grilles that make windows and doors harder to force, and bollards to keep unauthorised vehicles away from your building.

Insurers often require a graded alarm system, so it's worth checking your policy before you buy. And if you already have one fitted, remember it needs a proper service at least once a year to keep working the way it should.

What's actually protecting your perimeter right now, and when did someone last check it?

Fobs, cards or fingerprints: which access control fits?

Choosing access control isn't as simple as picking a lock. There are three credential types worth knowing about, and each suits a different kind of building.

Fobs and cards are the familiar option. Quick to issue, easy to replace if someone loses one, and they work well for staff entry doors or gyms with lots of members coming and going.

Pin and code systems skip the physical item altogether. No cards to lose, but codes can get shared or forgotten, so they suit lower-traffic doors better than busy commercial entrances.

Biometric readers, usually fingerprint or facial recognition, remove the credential problem entirely. Nobody can lend out their fingerprint. We fit these on Paxton Net2 systems across steel, timber, UPVC and aluminium doors, often alongside fob readers for visitors or contractors.

Which matters more for your building: speed of access, or knowing exactly who's coming through the door?

What to check before you pick a security company

Anyone can put "security specialist" on a van. What matters is what's behind it.

Before you sign anything, ask about accreditation. We're ISO 9002 quality assured, and our engineers are members of the Master Locksmiths Association, both of which mean someone's actually checking the standard of work, not just taking the customer's word for it.

Ask how long they've been trading, too. We've been fitting locks, access control and CCTV across Widnes, Warrington and Liverpool for over 30 years, and that kind of track record tends to show in how a job's finished, not just whether it gets done.

Finally, check whether they support what they install. A camera system or door entry set-up is only as good as the maintenance behind it, so ask what happens when something needs fixing at short notice.

What's the one thing you'd want a security company to prove before you'd trust them with your building?

Warehouse security: what facilities managers get wrong

If your warehouse has more than three doors and over twenty people needing access, a stand-alone lock system is going to cause you headaches. You need something you can manage centrally.

Here's how to think about it.

Staff numbers and doors: small site, one user group, all staff needing the same access? A stand-alone system works fine and keeps costs down. Multiple groups, like warehouse staff, office staff, management and cleaners, all needing different hours and different doors? That's when a networked system such as Paxton Net2 earns its keep.

Time-based access: you can set warehouse staff to enter 9am to 5pm weekdays only, cleaners 6pm to 8pm, and management with round-the-clock access, all from one piece of software.

Beyond the doors: locks and alarms deter most opportunist break-ins, but sites with real footfall or higher risk areas often need perimeter measures too, bollards to stop vehicles getting close, anti-climb spikes, or anti-vandal grilles on glazing.

Do you actually know how many people currently hold keys or access credentials to your site?

Not sure when to re-key your locks? Here's a quick check

Moved into a new place recently, or handed keys to a tradesperson you never got back? That's usually the moment locks should be changed, not just left as they are.

Lost keys are more common than people think, and once one goes missing, you can't be sure who has a copy.

A few situations worth acting on:

New tenants or new ownership: previous keys could still be in circulation.
A key snapped in the lock or went missing after a break-in attempt.
You've had a lodger, cleaner, or contractor with access who's since moved on.

For blocks of flats or offices with multiple doors, a master key system solves a lot of this. One key per tenant that also opens shared entrances, with a proper record of who holds what.

Worth checking what's actually covered by your locks now. Are they insurance approved, and do they meet the standard your policy needs?

Automatic gates: what needs checking, and when

Automatic gates take a battering. Wind, rain, daily traffic, and they're often the first thing anyone sees at your property, so a fault doesn't just look bad, it leaves your perimeter open.

A few things worth checking regularly:

Safety edges and sensors, to make sure the gate stops when it should
Hinges, tracks and motors, for wear that leads to sticking or grinding
Locking mechanisms, so they're still holding firm under daily use

How often depends on how much traffic the gate sees. Busy commercial sites often need a check every 3 months, while quieter domestic gates can usually stretch to 6 or 12.

Planned maintenance catches the small issues (a worn hinge, a slow sensor) before they turn into a gate stuck open, or worse, stuck shut.

When did you last have yours looked at?
