As our summers become hotter and drier, we’ve been rethinking the way we approach planting design to create gardens that are more resilient and better suited to the conditions we’re experiencing.

For this project, the planting scheme has been carefully considered to include a greater proportion of drought-tolerant and resilient species, reducing reliance on watering while still creating a beautiful, layered garden.

By selecting plants that are well suited to their environment, we can create landscapes that are not only more sustainable, but also continue to thrive through increasingly challenging summer conditions.

We believe the landscape should be considered alongside the architecture, rather than treated as an afterthought.

For this project, the planting scheme was carefully developed to feel like a natural extension of the house, taking inspiration from its materials, colours and coastal setting.

The planting, textures and tones work together to soften the architecture and create a seamless transition between the home and garden, whilst responding to the character of the surrounding landscape.

By designing the house and garden together, every element feels connected — creating a home that sits naturally within its setting.

At Pier House, our greatest challenge wasn't creating something new.

A key part of the design was finding practical, considered ways to accommodate the family’s love of sailing, with generous storage for all the equipment that comes with it.

From robust, low-maintenance materials to clever storage solutions, every element was designed around the clients’ lifestyle — creating a home that works hard when it’s in use, and is easy to leave behind when it’s time to head home.
