As we are already in March, here’s a simple checklist of activities anyone can do! with minimal tools!
Showing your lawn a little love now will save you a lot of frustration later in the summer!
1. Scarify - if you’re lucky enough to own or know someone with a scarifier great, otherwise grab a rake and rake out the moss and thatch (dead grass) this helps air and light reach the soil
2. First cut - put your mower on its highest setting, your aiming to only take the tips off, never more than a third at once or you’ll stress your grass
3. Aerate - grab a garden fork and push hundreds of holes in the lawn, this will help if the lawn is compacted, doing this allows air and water to the roots, the deeper your roots get now the greener your grass will stay in dry conditions
4. Overseed - spread seed on bare patches and cover with a thin layer of soil, keep it damp and in two weeks you’ll start to see little green shoots with any luck
5. Feed - once these steps are complete use a spring fertiliser to boost growth!
A few key points
- Try to avoid this activity if we are expecting a cold weather snap/frost,
- using the correct fertiliser is important depending on the time of year your grass will need different nutrients for example in the summer you want a higher nitrogen level whereas winter you want lower nitrogen and higher phosphorus/potassium!
- moss hates iron! It’ll turn it black and kill it off then you can just rake away 7-10 days after the iron application
Doing this is hard work! It really isn’t for the faint of heart but is so worth it!
Oh and it doesn’t last forever you need to do this at the beginning and end of the grass growing season
Doing it at the end is great because the grass plant focuses on root growth not leaf in the winter
Any questions give me a shout!
