🌿 A little update from Deeproots Gardening 🌿

When I first started Deeproots, I made the decision to focus purely on the horticultural side of gardening — planting, pruning, borders, plant care and everything in between as this is my passion.

This did mean I sometimes had to turn down jobs simply because a garden may have had a lawn or hedge that needed doing due to not having the rigjt equipment, Which was a shame, but my focus has always been on horticultural side of things.

I've have now been offering this service for a while now, but I thought I'd make people aware — especially anyone who may have contacted Deeproots in the past and been turned down for this reason.

I've invested in the equipment to take on small to medium-sized lawns and hedges when they're part of a garden I'm already working on. 🌱✂️

So while horticultural work will always be at the heart of Deeproots, I'm now able to offer a more complete service where lawns and hedges are part of the overall garden project as we have being doing for the last 12 months🌿 😊

🌿 Plant Tip – Phormium (New Zealand Flax) 🌿

Phormiums are fantastic architectural plants, giving gardens that bold, exotic look with their strappy evergreen foliage. They’re also tough, drought tolerant once established and great for coastal gardens. 🌱

✂️ When should you tidy them?
The best time is generally spring, when you can remove old, dead or winter-damaged leaves right down to the base.

⚠️ But don’t automatically cut them hard back!
Phormiums are evergreen and a hard cut can leave them looking bare for quite some time, with recovery potentially being slow. If a clump has simply become too large, lifting and dividing it in spring can often be a better option.

🌱 Sometimes good horticulture is knowing what not to cut!

A little plant knowledge can make a big difference when caring for an established garden. 🌿

DEEPROOTS GARDENING – LATE SEPTEMBER / OCTOBER

We’re heading into October, and there’s still plenty to be getting on with in the garden before winter arrives.

Some of the jobs I shall be busy with over the coming weeks:

🌱 Dividing and moving herbaceous perennials – a great time while the soil is still warm and moist.

🌷 Planting spring bulbs – now is the perfect time to get your spring displays started. Tulips are generally planted a little later once the soil has cooled.

🌿 Planting new shrubs, perennials and other plants – autumn conditions are ideal for getting plants established.

🌹 Roses – climbing roses may need some attention to secure long growth and reduce the risk of wind damage and wind rock. Other roses can also benefit from a tidy-up, removing dead or damaged growth before winter, with their main pruning generally carried out later.

🍂 Borders – a great time to get overgrown borders back under control, prepare beds and make space for new planting.

🌳 Planning for next year – autumn is also a good time to start thinking about new borders, planting plans and improvements for next season.

As a fully qualified horticulturalist with over 18 years' experience, I focus on the horticultural side of gardening, helping plants and gardens thrive rather than simply keeping them tidy.

If your garden needs some autumn attention, feel free to get in touch. 🌿

🌱 Why I ❤️ No-Dig Gardening (And You Might Too!) 🌱

Hi, as a passionate horticulturalist, I’m always exploring ways to help gardens thrive — and one of my favourite methods is no-dig gardening.

it’s a way of working with nature rather than against it. Instead of turning the soil with a spade, we add layers of rich compost and mulch on top, letting worms, fungi and microorganisms do the hard work for us. This preserves the soil’s natural structure and supports its whole ecosystem.

Here’s why I think it’s brilliant:
✨ Healthier soil = happier plants — Keeping soil life undisturbed lets beneficial organisms flourish, making nutrients more available and boosting plant health naturally.
✨ Less weeding & watering — A good mulch layer suppresses weeds and helps retain moisture, meaning less time bent over and more time enjoying your garden.
✨ Great for the planet — No-dig helps lock carbon in the ground, reduces the need for synthetic fertilisers, and protects soil from erosion.

For me, gardening is about encouraging life — not breaking it up. No-dig helps me do just that, and I’d love to help you try it too. 🌿

Have questions about starting your own no-dig bed? Drop me a message and I'll be thrilled too help, for anything horticultural feel free to get in touch for a quote.

🌷 NOW IS THE TIME TO START THINKING ABOUT SPRING! 🌷

Autumn is one of my favourite times of year in the garden, and if you’re looking to fill your borders with colour next spring, now is the perfect time to start planning your bulb planting.
🍃 irisis
🌱 Daffodils
🌸 Crocuses
💜 Alliums
🌷 Hyacinths
🌼 And many more spring-flowering bulbs

I can source bulbs to suit your garden, colour scheme and planting style, so if you’d like something a little more considered than simply planting a few bulbs here and there, get your orders in early and we can put a plan together.

Most spring-flowering bulbs are planted through September and October, while tulips are generally planted later, around October/November. Planting tulips later can also help reduce the risk of problems such as tulip fire, a fungal disease that can affect them.

There’s still plenty of time to move, split and plant herbaceous perennials while the soil is still warm and conditions are becoming more favourable for establishing new plants.

If your borders need rejuvenating, plants need dividing, or you want to start planning next spring's display, now is a great time to get started.

We’re now fully battery powered across all of our equipment! 🔋🌿

Same power, performance and quality of work, without the noise, fumes and hassle of petrol. 😃

At Deeproots Gardening, our main focus is on the horticultural side of gardening — from planting and plant care to pruning, border restoration, soil care and putting the right plants in the right place. 🌱✂️

We’re not primarily a lawn and hedge-cutting service, but if a garden we’re working on also has a lawn that needs cutting or hedges that need tidying, we’re more than happy to take care of those jobs too. 😊

It’s all about looking after the garden as a whole, with the knowledge and experience to get the best from your plants and outdoor space. 🌿
