This week I helped a customer in Kettering with a Grey Squirrel problem. 🐿️

During the initial survey, I found clear evidence of squirrels in the loft area — including plenty of chewed electrical cables. This highlights the damage squirrels can cause to properties, as well as the potential electrical and fire risks associated with gnawing on cables.

Many people think grey squirrels are cute and harmless, but they are a non-native invasive species in the UK. They have contributed significantly to the decline of our native red squirrel population through competition for food and the spread of squirrelpox, which is usually fatal to red squirrels.

In this case, the first squirrel was caught within just 20 hours, and within 7 days all four squirrels had been caught.

Throughout the treatment, I used a motion-sensing camera to monitor the loft and continued monitoring for a few days after the final capture to confirm there was no further squirrel activity before closing the job.

Routes of entry were also identified to be repaired before the next family of squirrels moves in.

🐝 Before and after wasp nest treatment!

This video from yesterday shows an active wasp nest before treatment, and the immediate reaction afterwards.

A tell-tale sign of an active nest is a constant stream of wasps flying in and out of the same spot, exactly as you can see in the first video.

Once treated, the wasps go into defence mode. As they move through the nest entrance and around the nest, they pick up the treatment powder and spread it throughout the colony, ensuring the entire nest is affected. In most cases, activity will have stopped by the following morning.

This particular nest was still relatively small as it's early in the wasp season. Left untreated, however, nests can grow dramatically over the coming weeks, producing thousands of wasps and becoming much more likely to cause problems around your home or garden. The sooner you act, the easier and safer it is for everyone.
