What can a macro examination tell us about a weld? 🔬

Macro examination gives us a closer look at the weld cross-section, helping to assess weld quality and identify features that may not be visible from the surface alone.

By preparing, polishing and etching a section of the weld, we can examine areas such as weld pe*******on, fusion, weld profile and the heat affected zone, as well as identify certain imperfections.

It’s an important part of weld testing and can be used as part of procedure qualification and other testing requirements.

How long does a welding qualification actually last? 👨‍🏭

Under BS EN ISO 9606-1, a welder qualification can be valid for two or three years, depending on the requirements, but maintaining that validity is just as important.

Welders need six-month continuity records signed by an approved supervisor to confirm they are still working within the scope of their qualification.

If the qualification hasn’t been used within the last six months, a retest may be required.

Not only do we handle welding qualifications, inspection and testing… apparently we do wildlife rescue too. 😂🐦

While visiting a client recently, Luke found himself with a slightly unexpected job after spotting a bird that had managed to get itself trapped...

Luckily, our very own wildlife rescue expert was on hand to help get it safely back outside. 👏

Safe to say, this wasn’t quite on the schedule for the day. 😂👨‍🏭

At WQiC, we use a 4K Ultra HD Digital Macro/Microscope from Spectrographic, giving our experienced laboratory team exceptionally clear, high-definition macro images at both high and low magnifications.

The equipment allows us to accurately assess leg lengths, throat thicknesses and toe angles, as well as identify gas pores, discontinuities and weld defects.
