🔐📮 A small addition that makes a big difference!

Last week we visited a commercial premises to make a rather useful modification to an existing aluminium shopfront door.

The problem was simple… there was no letterbox. Which, as design oversights go, is fairly inconvenient for a business that occasionally receives things made of paper.

Rather than replacing the door or settling for an awkward alternative, we carefully modified the existing aluminium door and installed a new letterbox, giving the premises a practical and tidy solution while keeping the existing door in place.

Working with aluminium commercial doors requires accurate measuring and careful cutting. Once you’ve made the hole, there’s rather famously no Ctrl+Z button. 😅

We’d like to say a massive thank you to our friends Adam, Jamie and the whole team at Gorilla Grapplers for welcoming Delta Forge Locksmiths as one of their affiliation partners.

But we also wanted to take the opportunity to return the support and shine a light on what the team at Gorilla Grapplers are building here in Waterlooville.

Gorilla Grapplers is a local martial arts academy offering Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, No-Gi Grappling, MMA, Striking and Yoga, with training available for everyone from complete beginners through to experienced competitors, as well as dedicated junior training.

🍃🍂 We hate to be the ones to admit it…but summer is on its way out! ☀️👋😢

As the weather begins to get milder, doors and windows can move slightly within their frames. Those little problems that were barely noticeable during summer can quickly become stiff locks, chilly draughts or a door that suddenly refuses to lock altogether!

Here are a few warning signs that something needs a little extra TLC:

🔑 The key feels stiff or needs wiggling.

🚪 You have to really lift the handle to lock the door.

⚙️ The handle feels loose, heavy or doesn’t return properly.

🌬️ You can feel a draught around the frame.

🪟 Windows are becoming difficult to open or close.

🔊 Hinges creak or locks make unusual clunky/crunchy noises.

A few useful tips:

✅ Keep door and window tracks clean and free from debris

✅ Check that handles and visible screws haven’t worked loose

✅ Lightly lubricate moving metal parts with a suitable mechanism lubricant after cleaning.

❌ Never force a stiff key or handle—it can turn a simple adjustment into a broken mechanism

Catching these warning signs early can often mean a straightforward adjustment or repair rather than a costly replacement.

🔑One key to rule them all, 🔑One key to find them, 🔑One key to bring them all and….. That’s enough of that, as we don’t want to be sued!

It’s all relevant, because here we have suite of new locks installed by us at Delta Forge Locksmiths last week. All these shiny new locks have been pinned to our customers needs and supplied with 25 new keys. However one key opens them all! 🔑

These methodology is mainly applicable to commercial properties or larger domestic homes in which access needs to be streamlined.

A little job I (Mat) particularly enjoyed this week…

I headed out to my favourite place… our Great British countryside! 🚜🇬🇧🌾

This customer’s home was discreetly tucked away within our nearby South Downs, surrounded by horse paddocks and crops. It was only accessible via a single track lane that was probably two miles long, with no tarmac to be seen.

Upon arriving, I quickly identified the customer’s problem. A heavily worn cylinder was causing them to have to do the lock and key equivalent of the Hokey Cokey every time they wanted to unlock the door. 🔑🤦🏻‍♂️

I replaced the cylinder with a new, trusted Yale rim cylinder, serviced the internal lock mechanism, and cut five additional genuine keys, saving the customer a special trip just to have extra keys cut.

Some people might consider country lanes a nightmare. I won’t lie, it can get a little dicey when you’re travelling down a narrow lane and come face to face with a big John Deere tractor. 😬🚜

That aside, I can’t help but take a moment to appreciate how lucky we are to have such beautiful countryside right on our local doorstep.

It’s jobs like these that remind me why I love what I do.

A failed multipoint lock mechanism we at Delta Forge Locksmiths replaced last week for a local customer.

After fitting a brand-new mechanism and carrying out a full door realignment, this composite door is operating smoothly again and should provide many more years of reliable service. ⚙️🔧🔒

It's also worth remembering that the lifespan of any multipoint lock mechanism can be significantly reduced if the door is out of alignment.

Even a slight drop in the door can put unnecessary strain on the mechanism every time it's locked or unlocked, eventually leading to premature failure.

Regular adjustments can help prevent more costly repairs and keep your door locking as it should. 👍🏡
