Rats are clever creatures!
Did you know rats develop incredibly good memories of their surroundings?
They learn where things are, including corners, walls, roof spaces and other familiar landmarks. They can also display neophobia — a natural fear of new or unfamiliar objects.
This short clip of an adult rat in a roof space in Chester-Le-Street, shows that behaviour perfectly.
This adult rat knows that the trap in front of it wasn’t there before. So even if there’s a tasty treat inside, it may still keep its distance until it decides that the new object is safe.
In some situations, it can take several days — sometimes even a week or more — for a rat to become comfortable approaching something unfamiliar.
This is one reason professional rat control isn't simply a case of putting down a trap and hoping for the best.
