Some of your radiators warm up fine and one never does?

If it's cold at the bottom while the top's hot, that's sludge — years of debris settling inside the system. Bleeding won't shift it, and neither will a new radiator.

A power flush pushes the whole system through under pressure and clears it out. Cold spots go, the boiler stops working as hard, and rooms actually get warm again.

£450 for a system up to ten radiators.

Best done now, while the heating's still off, rather than in December when you need it.

Radiator hot at the bottom, cold at the top?

That's air, and you can sort it yourself in five minutes.

Turn the heating off and let everything cool. Find the small square valve at the top corner of the radiator. Radiator key on it, cloth underneath, quarter turn anti-clockwise. You'll hear hissing — that's the air coming out. The second water appears, close it.

Do the downstairs radiators first, then upstairs.

Then check your pressure gauge, because bleeding drops it. Back up to 1 to 1.5 bar if it's low.

Cold at the bottom is a different problem entirely, and no amount of bleeding will touch it.

Last day of Gas Safety Week, so the one that matters most.

Things worth noticing on any gas appliance:

- A lazy yellow or orange flame where it should be crisp and blue
- Black or sooty marks around the appliance
- More condensation on the windows in that room than you'd expect
- A pilot light that keeps going out for no obvious reason

None of these means panic. They mean an appliance isn't burning as it should, and that's worth a proper look rather than a wait-and-see.

Gas Safety Week, and a fair question for a Saturday: how do you know the person you've let into your house is who they say they are?

You ask. Every Gas Safe engineer carries an ID card and expects to be asked for it. If someone's funny about showing it, that tells you what you need to know.

Boiler locked out, you reset it, and it locks out again the same day?

Stop resetting it.

A lockout is a safety device doing its job. Once is worth a reset — it can be a one-off. Twice in a day means something is repeatedly going wrong and the boiler is protecting you from it. Resetting over and over doesn't fix the fault, it just clears the warning.

Note the code on the display before you reset it. That code is the fastest route to knowing what's actually wrong, and there's a Worcester guide to them on our site.
