Hundreds of beautiful plants going in at project including some super-sized specimen trees here: teardrop-shaped Carpinus betulus ‘Fastigiata’ underplanted with colourful perennials; pleached Carpinus betulus for privacy and a high hedge effect; a multi-stemmed Pinus sylvestris ‘Watereri’ for evergreen interest; Taxus baccata topiary balls; giant Amelanchier lamarkii framing the front of the property; flaming red Parrotia persica ‘Bella’ contrasting beautifully with the blue sky and pool; and more Carpinus betulus which will turn bronze for winter adding metallic texture to the red brick.

This stunning Cotswolds farmhouse, redeveloped by Hayward Smart Architects, is over 100 years old, so a sapling-stage garden was never an option. We specified established trees for instant presence and a sense of history, and each one was manoeuvred into position by our team of skilled landscapers.

Autumn is the best time to plant perennials. The soil is still warm, the rain does most of the watering for you, and while everything above ground slows down, the roots get busy. By spring they’re settled in and ready to go, which usually means stronger plants, earlier flowers, and plants that can cope better with a hot summer. And of course at this time of year you can see exactly where there are gaps to be filled, and what your border palettes are looking like 🌸

Here’s a nice job for a dry September Sunday - collecting the seeds from your annuals to save for next year. Poppies, honesty, nigella, panicum, nasturtiums, marigolds, sweet peas and cosmos all give up their seeds easily when the pods or seed heads have dried out and lost their colour - just pop them in an envelope, label them, and keep them dry and cool till spring.

No second chances here! The patio at project was pointed the other day with Flowpoint ‘Smooth Lime’ - a pourable grout which sets quickly, so there’s no room for hesitation.

Although conditions were perfect, the team kept everything misted while it went off in the joints for a perfect finish. Pretty satisfying to watch, don’t you think?

This morning’s dispatch from the frontline! Today is the final push for James and team on the Great Charity Bike Ride and they’re really starting to feel the hills. But, as you can see, they are SO CLOSE to achieving their target - just a few more donations and they’ll have raised enough to fund vital community singing projects that help people living with dementia and disadvantaged children in the most creative, inspiring and uplifting way.

As you may know, Isola founder James was once a professional singer and music scholar, and he still sings with the wonderful . This year Isola is sponsoring Armonico’s Great Charity Bike Challenge — and James is taking part himself, raising funds for music therapy projects that support people living with dementia and children, among others.

A group of musicians and singers from Armonico are cycling the 100-mile Jurassic Coast route from Exeter to Wimborne, stopping at schools and venues along the way to perform highlights from Handel’s Messiah and Zadok the Priest.

Here’s James this morning, gearing up for day 3 in less-than-perfect conditions! He’s smiling in the video, but make no mistake — this is a tough challenge, and every donation helps push him and the other rider-performers through those hilly miles.
