Signs your boiler needs replacing not just repairing.
Every boiler reaches a point where the sensible choice is a new one rather than another repair. Knowing where that point is can save money and stress, especially in the middle of a cold snap.
Most boilers are built to last around ten to fifteen years. If your boiler is approaching or past that age and something has gone wrong, it is worth weighing the cost of the repair against the cost of a new, more efficient model, rather than assuming a repair is automatically the cheaper option.
One breakdown is a repair. Two or three in the space of a year is a pattern, and usually a sign that the boiler is wearing out generally rather than suffering one fixable fault. At that point, every repair is really just buying a little more time.
An ageing boiler loses efficiency gradually, so a noticeable jump in gas usage without a change in habits is often the boiler working harder to do the same job. A newer, A-rated boiler can make a real difference here.
Banging, whistling or gurgling, a persistent smell, or more condensation on windows near the boiler can all point to a system that is struggling, and are worth having looked at rather than ignored.
If a boiler is on the fence between repair and replacement, it is always worth asking for a straightforward opinion on both the cost and the long-term sense of each option, rather than being sold the more expensive one by default.
