MAKE AN ENTRANCE.

The entrance to a garden room deserves as much thought as the room itself.

It’s the first interaction you have with the space. It creates a sense of arrival and gives the architecture a clear focal point.

For this bespoke room, we positioned the entrance on the side return. A recessed doorway and canopy create definition, while giving practical shelter when you arrive with your hands full, searching for keys while the British weather does what it does best.

For other designs, a front-facing entrance can become part of the main architectural statement.

It comes down to understanding how you’ll approach the room, how you’ll use it and how the entrance connects with the garden.

Door position. Approach. Lighting. Materials. Steps. Canopy. Sightlines.

There’s something special about returning to one of our rooms once the garden has had time to grow around it.

SIDE-ON. A DIFFERENT WAY TO SEE YOUR GARDEN.

Not every garden room needs to sit at the end of the garden.

Our architecture team increasingly designs rooms side-on, particularly for longer gardens, pool rooms and spaces where we want the building to become part of the landscape.

Positioned this way, the room can create two distinct garden zones.

Working alongside garden designers, each side can have its own character. A courtyard. A pool. A private terrace. A more natural planted garden beyond.

But perhaps the biggest difference is how it feels from inside.

With considered glazing on both sides, you feel surrounded by the garden rather than simply looking back towards the house. More connected. More private. More immersed in the landscape.

One room. Two gardens. And a completely different relationship between inside and out.

More of us are choosing evenings at home. Good drinks. Good music. Friends dropping in. Somewhere comfortable to sit, talk and stay far later than planned.

So why should all of that happen in the kitchen?

This garden room was designed as its own little destination. A bar and lounge surrounded by planting, tucked away at the end of the garden.

Close enough to home.

Far enough away to feel like you’ve gone somewhere.

And perhaps that’s the real luxury.

Not having to go out to have a great night out.

A garden room should feel like it belongs.

For us, the finer details are what make that happen.

This project sits within a steeply sloping garden, so the relationship between the room, the decking and the surrounding landscape was an important part of the design.

The clients wanted the room to extend naturally into the garden. With the bi-fold doors open, the decking becomes part of the living space, creating a much stronger connection between inside and out.

We carried the same Shou Sugi Ban charred timber cladding from the garden room down onto the raised decking structure. The result is a simple detail, but an important one. It ties the different levels together and helps the whole structure sit naturally within the garden.

Shou Sugi Ban, also known as Yakisugi, is a traditional Japanese timber-charring technique. We love it for its deep tones, distinctive grain and textured finish. Every board has its own character.

Because great garden room design doesn’t stop at the doors.

It’s the cladding.
The decking.
The levels.
The landscaping.
The junctions.
The finishing touches.

It’s all in the details.
