Working under the National Association of Chimney Sweeps provides Cutler and Sweep with some fantastic training directly provided by the President of the Association, Martin Glynn. He cares a lot about the trade and knows a lot about its cruel and not-so historic past. Here he discusses those dark days with comedian, Joe Lycett in an episode of Who Do You Think You Are?

Joe learns about his ancestor's difficult work as a child chimney s...

This is my trade association. You'll find it mentioned in the appendix of Document J of the Building Regs and I wouldn't be anywhere else!

🔥A CLEAN CHIMNEY IS A SAFER CHIMNEY

Soot, tar and other deposits can build up inside a chimney and, depending on the fuel and appliance, may increase the risk of a chimney fire.

Having your chimney swept helps remove these deposits and gives your chimney sweep an opportunity to identify potential problems.

Don’t leave it until there’s a problem.

So far this week I have swept open fires, log burners, agas and even a campervan flue. I have advised on a bee infestation, replaced rope seal, swapped out some fire bricks, applied fire cement to a connecting pipe and identified two dangerous situations. It really is a joy to serve the local community and the thought that I contribute to safer heating practices ensures I sleep well! www.cutlerandsweep.com

Is your chimney sweep registered with NACS, the National Association of Chimney Sweeps? Approved Document J, provides Building Regulation guidance for combustion appliances and listed in appendix H are the details of recognised trade associations. For sweeps, you will only find NACS listed here.

With high levels of training and a strong focus on household safety, NACS sweeps can be trusted to thoroughly clean and repair your solid fuel appliances and associated flues. The industry can attract nefarious types as the work is all hidden behind the wall.

Having spent 2 years steering the local community towards safe practices and buildings insurance compliance, I notice there are recently some others entering the market without NACS certification. To avoid the following scams be sure to check for NACS membership and feel free to observe your sweep:

1. two rods up and gone.
2. Leaving the property within 20 minutes of arriving.
3. "The hoover takes care of it"; it doesn't!
4. Dangerous situations left unchecked.

Established in 2025, Cutler and Sweep has taken on hundreds of satisfied customers in the area around Melton, Bingham, Grantham and Oakham. 2026 brings with it the new challenge of managing seasonal demand so I have limited my social media posts in recent months and recently took the decision to cease all print advertising.

Most people are finding the business through word of mouth and Google (check out all the 5 star reviews!). So why post now?

The only downside is that some people may interpret the relative silence as a sign that Cutler and Sweep is no longer available. It very much is and I would be delighted to hear from you. Yes, I'm busy, but the priority is to keep the local community safe in their homes and Cutler and Sweep will continue to do what is necessary to make that happen. In August my few remaining Autumn slots will rapidly fill up so perhaps we can help each other by using the time available in late July and August to get you chimney swept and safe for the next burning season. www.cutlerandsweep.com
