Deadline looms for landlords to run Electrical Safety Checks or face a hefty fine:

All landlords need to have had electrical safety inspections carried out on their properties by 1 April this year, or risk being fined up to £30,000.

The Ministry for Housing, Communities and Local Government (MHCLG) introduced legislation for LANDLORDS in England to make it a mandatory requirement to have electrical safety checks carried out in their properties.

These electrical safety checks are to be carried out at intervals of no more than 5 years by a qualified and competent person.

This new legislation came into force on 1st June 2020 for Landlords in England for electrical safety checks to be completed on their properties following the timeline below-
(a) all new specified tenancies from 1st July 2020; and (b) all existing specified tenancies from 1st April 2021.
So WHAT IS AN ELECTRICAL SAFETY CHECK?
This is a series of inspections and tests of the electrical installation carried out by An NICEIC Approved Electrical Contractor who’s also registered on the Private Rented Sector Scheme (PRS).

An Electrical Installation Condition Report (EICR) is submitted to the client giving details including whether or not the property is satisfactory for continuing letting and when it should be next inspected.

An unqualified electrician who rewired a house has been jailed.

The unqualified electrician has been has been jailed for 13 months thanks to a successful prosecution from Hartlepool Borough Council’s Trading Standards team.

John Drac, 35, of Rowan Place, Newton Aycliffe, pleaded guilty to fraud and consumer protection related offences after falsely claiming to be a qualified electrician.

Part P of the Building Regulations effectively outlawed DIY electrical work when implemented back in 2005.
