Do you need building regulations approval for an extension?

In most cases, yes.

Even if planning permission is not required, your extension or conversion will usually still need to comply with building regulations.

These rules are there to make sure the work is safe, structurally sound, energy efficient, and built properly. They can cover things such as insulation, drainage, ventilation, fire safety, structural work, and electrical requirements.

This is one of the reasons we always recommend getting proper advice early. It helps avoid delays, unexpected costs, and problems later in the project.

At RG Developments, we make sure every build is approached properly, with the right attention given to both the design and the practical details behind it.

Is a garage conversion worth it?

If your garage has become more of a storage space than a useful part of your home, a garage conversion could be a smart way to add practical living space.

Depending on the layout of your property, a garage conversion could become a home office, playroom, utility area, extra sitting room, gym, or even part of a larger open-plan kitchen design.

One of the biggest benefits is that you are making use of space that already exists, which can sometimes make it a more straightforward option than building a new extension.

However, the details still matter. Insulation, access, flooring, ventilation, heating, and building regulations all need to be considered properly.

If you are thinking about converting your garage, we can help you understand what is realistic for your home.

We recently helped renovate a 1930s detached house, including a new roof, anthracite double glazing, composite doors, drainage, k-rend rendering, and a kitchen extension with skylights.

The client was really pleased with the planning, quality of materials, workmanship, finish, and aftercare from Damian, Lee, and the team.

Feedback like this means a lot to us, especially on projects that completely transform how a home looks and feels.

If you are thinking about renovating or extending your home, get in touch with RG Developments today.

What should you ask before choosing a builder?

Choosing the right builder is one of the most important decisions you will make during any home improvement project.

Before committing, it is worth asking questions such as:

• Have they completed similar projects before?
• Will they communicate clearly throughout the build?
• Are costs explained properly from the start?
• Do they understand local properties and building requirements?
• Will the work be managed properly from start to finish?

A good builder should make you feel informed, not pressured. They should be honest about what is realistic, clear about the process, and respectful of your home throughout the project.

At RG Developments, we believe trust, communication, and quality workmanship matter just as much as the finished result.

Making better use of the space you already have.

Not every home needs a huge extension to feel completely different.

Sometimes, the biggest improvement comes from reworking the layout, opening up unused areas, or converting space that is already there.

Garage conversions, loft conversions, kitchen knock-throughs, and carefully planned extensions can all help create a home that feels brighter, more practical, and better suited to modern family life.

The important part is choosing the right solution for your property, your budget, and the way you actually live day to day.

If your home feels too small, too dark, or no longer works for your family, moving is not always the only option.

Speak to RG Developments about what could be possible.

This rear and side wraparound extension is now fully watertight, with the external envelope complete and the transformation moving inside.

We’re onto the finishing stages now:
• Self-levelling the floors
• Laying herringbone flooring throughout
• Installing a brand-new kitchen
• Painting and decorating
• Second-fix electrics & plumbing
• Then finishing it all off with the landscaping outside

This is the stage where a build really starts to come alive. Clean lines, open-plan living, loads of natural light — and in a few short weeks this space will feel completely different to the house we first walked into.

A few months ago this was trenches, mud, steels and groundwork. Now you can finally see the home taking shape. That transition never gets old. I’m really looking forward to reveal the final result!

Single-storey or double-storey extension?

Both options can completely transform a home, but the right choice depends on what you need the space to do.

A single-storey extension is often ideal for creating a larger kitchen, dining space, family room, or improved connection to the garden.

A double-storey extension can add space upstairs as well as downstairs, which may be useful if you need an extra bedroom, bathroom, office, or more balanced family layout.

The decision usually comes down to budget, planning, the structure of the property, and your long-term plans for the home.

The best starting point is to think about what your current home is missing, then work backwards from there.

If you are unsure which option would suit your property, our team can talk you through it.

How do you know if your home is suitable for an extension?

One of the first questions many homeowners ask is whether their property can actually be extended.

The answer depends on a few key things, including the space available, the existing structure, access to the property, planning rules, and what you want the finished space to achieve.

Some homes are ideal for rear extensions, while others may benefit more from a side extension, loft conversion, garage conversion, or a full rework of the existing layout.

That is why it is always worth getting proper advice before making any decisions. A good extension should not just add square footage, it should make your home work better for everyday life.

If you are thinking about extending and want honest advice on what may be possible, get in touch with our team.

Are there downsides to open-plan living?

Open plan kitchens can work brilliantly, but it is important to be honest about the challenges too.

Less privacy, more noise, cooking smells carrying further, and the pressure to keep everything looking tidy are all things homeowners should think about.

That does not mean open plan is the wrong choice. It just means the design needs to work harder.

Good extraction, smart storage, clear zoning, and the right layout all make a huge difference.

We always believe the best spaces are the ones that not only look great, but also work properly for day-to-day life.
