A little update from us 🌱

As Greenspace SOS has grown, so has the range of environmental and community work we're involved in.

We're currently updating our Articles of Association so that they better reflect what we actually do today – protecting and restoring habitats, creating nature-rich spaces, improving biodiversity, helping communities access and enjoy green spaces, and creating opportunities for volunteering, learning and employment.

It's really just about making sure what's written on paper properly reflects what Greenspace SOS has become and where we're heading.

Over the last 12 months, Greenspace SOS has restored more than 150 neglected greenspaces and created eight brand new community spaces. With plenty more projects planned throughout the rest of 2026 and into 2027, we felt it was a good time to develop our own understanding of greenspaces, and more specifically, how great greenspaces become part of something much bigger!

When we create a community greenspace, we don't just want it to look nice. We want it to support biodiversity, improve wellbeing, encourage people outdoors, and become part of a wider green infrastructure that benefits the whole community.

After doing some research, Copenhagen stood out for its long-standing approach to integrating nature into everyday urban life. We also discovered Ekostaden Augustenborg in Malmö, a pioneering urban sustainability project that has become a benchmark for community-led green infrastructure.

Last week we spent a few days exploring both cities to see these places for ourselves. To walk through them, use them, and understand what makes them work so well.

From green roofs and living walls to sustainable drainage, allotments, community gardens, play spaces and outdoor recreation, what impressed us most wasn't any one feature on its own. It was how everything worked together to create greener, healthier and more resilient neighbourhoods.

Our visits included King's Garden, the National Botanical Garden in Copenhagen, Folkets Park and Ekostaden Augustenborg in Malmö. We also cycled out to CopenHill – a waste-to-energy power station that combines essential infrastructure with public recreation, including a ski slope, hiking trail, climbing wall and café. It's a brilliant example of thinking differently about how urban spaces can serve both people and the environment.

Trips like this aren't about finding ideas to copy. Every community is different. But seeing successful projects in person gives us fresh perspective, new ideas, and plenty of inspiration that we'll hopefully be able to adapt and incorporate into future Greenspace SOS projects here in South Wales.

We're looking forward to putting some of what we've learned into practice over the coming months!

Part 3: When Titch asks to use your seat

Last week I threw Titch a pencil and somehow he caught a massive one… 🤣✏️

This week we thought we’d try a spoon. 🥄

Safe to say the results were exactly the same. 🤦🏼‍♂️😂

This time last year we were half way through completing the Welsh 3 Peaks Challenge, raising money for the wonderful Tŷ Hafan Children's Hospice. It did test us at times (Cadair Idris tried to kill us). But it's a proper team challenge, and we're a proper team 💪 stuck together, worked together to keep morale high, helped each other through cramps and spells of dehydration, and hit the top of all three peaks together.

We would highly recommend the challenge to anyone who fancies pushing themselves, seeing some amazing sights along the way, and bonding with a team of people you know you can rely on, and who can rely on you.

We are proud to share another recently completed project by the GreenspaceSOS team!! 🌿

Recently, we had the pleasure of transforming a small, overgrown and unused area within the grounds of St Mary’s the Virgin Church Primary School, into a vibrant outdoor learning and nature space for the children to enjoy for years to come.

This project included:

🌱 Clearing and preparing the area
🪴 Building and installing 5 raised planters
🪑 Constructing a curved seating area
🌼 Creating a curved wildflower bank to encourage biodiversity
🍎 Planting fruit trees and shrubs
🐞 Building a recycled pallet bug hotel
🪵 Installing bark flooring with a winding paved pathway throughout

Projects like these are exactly what we love to do. Creating spaces that allow children to connect with nature, learn about biodiversity, and experience the outdoors in a meaningful way is something we’re incredibly passionate about. Seeing an unused space transformed into an engaging environment for learning, exploration, and wellbeing is always so rewarding for us.

A huge thank you to the school and our good friends at Earthwatch Europe for trusting us with their vision.. We can’t wait to see the space flourish over time!
