The Equality Act 2010 – Why It Matters in Commercial Fit-Out Projects
When planning an office, industrial facility, education space, or workplace refurbishment, it’s easy to focus on aesthetics, functionality, and budget.
However, one area that should never be overlooked is compliance with the Equality Act 2010.
The Act places a duty on organisations to make reasonable adjustments for people with disabilities, ensuring they can access and use facilities without being placed at a disadvantage.
In fit-out projects, this can include:
✔ Accessible entrances and circulation routes
✔ Suitable door widths and ironmongery
✔ Accessible WC facilities
✔ DDA-compliant kitchens and welfare facilities
✔ Appropriate signage and wayfinding
✔ Consideration of lighting, acoustics, and workplace accessibility
We’ve visited many buildings where facilities have evolved over time, leaving accessibility considerations behind. While every project is different, early planning and proper surveys can help identify potential issues before they become costly problems.
At Creation Office, accessibility isn’t treated as an afterthought. It’s considered from the design stage through to project completion, helping clients create spaces that are practical, inclusive, and fit for purpose.
A well-designed workplace should work for everyone.
