Cirencester is home to the world's tallest and oldest yew hedge, located at the historic Bathurst Estate. Planted in 1720, the hedge stands 40ft (11m) high and 150ft wide.

The 1962 photo highlights the task of trimming the living green giant which required immense skill and balance.

Gardeners used dangerous A-framed and straight wooden ladders to reach the top.

In 1962, the hedge already stood around 11 meters (36 to 40 feet) high.

The photograph acts as a time capsule for traditional, grueling horticultural work. βœ‚οΈπŸŒ²

Giant Sequoia 🌲🌍

Sequoiadendron giganteum (also known as the giant sequoia, giant redwood, Sierra redwood or Wellingtonia) is a species of coniferous tree, classified in the family Cupressaceae in the subfamily Sequoioideae. Giant sequoia specimens are the largest trees on Earth.

They are native to the groves on the western slopes of the Sierra Nevada mountain range of California but have been introduced, planted, and grown around the world.

The giant sequoia is listed as an endangered species by the IUCN with fewer than 80,000 remaining in its native California.

The giant sequoia grow to an average height of 50–85 m (164–279 ft) with trunk diameters ranging from 6–8 m (20–26 ft). Record trees have been measured at 94.8 m (311 ft) tall. The specimen known to have the greatest diameter at breast height is the General Grant tree at 8.8 m (29 ft). Giant sequoias are among the oldest living organisms on Earth.

The oldest known giant sequoia is 3,200–3,266 years old.

Little chunky pine trees with short, stocky structures are the best for bonsai πŸ‘ŒπŸ˜ŽπŸŒ³

Pinus mugo 'Green Pearl' is a charming dwarf pine that stands out for its compact, rounded form and lush green foliage. This low-growing conifer is particularly well-suited for rock gardens, container arrangements, and adding year-round structure to smaller outdoor spaces.

Its neat appearance makes it an excellent choice for those looking to enhance their landscape with a touch of elegance without overwhelming the area.

The plant develops a symmetrical, dome-shaped mound that grows at a very slow pace, making it easy to maintain. Its short, dark green needles are densely packed on stout shoots, contributing to its tidy and polished look.

One of the most appealing aspects of 'Green Pearl' is its low-maintenance nature; it requires no pruning to maintain its shape, allowing gardeners to enjoy its beauty without the hassle of regular upkeep. This makes it an ideal candidate for alpine plantings, raised beds, and patio containers, where it can thrive with minimal intervention.

In addition to its aesthetic appeal, 'Green Pearl' provides winter interest and serves as a striking evergreen contrast in mixed plantings. Once established, it demonstrates impressive resilience, tolerating poor soil conditions and drought, which makes it a versatile choice for various garden settings.

With a height and spread of approximately 50 cm by 80 cm (20 inches by 31 inches), this delightful dwarf pine is perfect for those seeking a reliable and attractive little addition to their landscape.
