Jay Ebbrell On a mission to help others in the industry through my online program From The Foundations Up

After two decades in business, I’ve learned this:

You don’t build a better business by having fewer problems.

You build a better business by graduating to better ones.

Early on, it’s about putting out fires:

Late-paying customers.

Last-minute changes.

Staff sickness.

Running out of work.

Cashflow worries.

But if all your energy stays there, you’ll never get around to the things that actually move the needle.

Building systems.

Improving your sales process.

Developing your team.

Increasing profitability.

Creating a business that gives you more freedom rather than demanding more from you.

Problems never disappear.

The goal is simply to stop spending your life solving the same ones.

What problem are you solving most of the time right now?

Timing is everything!

if where we are in business or life in general is okay nothing is particularly broken. Nothing is too painful and nothing is driving a desire for more then we are unlikely to change what we are doing.

Humans are creatures of habit and comfort and we all go through spells in life where we are happy in the comfort.

For others, they get a desire for more and strive for bigger things and when that time comes, you have to take action and get help.

Speed from lead shows the client you are efficient, reliable and responsive.

We also live in a world where everything is fast, like faster than a scaffolder through an off licence door.

Everyone has become accustomed to instant so when a week passes and they don’t hear anything from you, all faith is lost. Someone else is already winning the race to win the work.

Be prompt, show intent and win more work.

Multiple avenues of lead generation for the win!

When I started out you advertised in your local newspaper we then moved onto the yellow pages all the old fellas will remember.

Everyone starting their business name with AAA to be first on the page as it was alphabetical order 😅

Then we moved to websites if you didn’t have a website you weren’t in the race and now it’s the social media era.

If you are 40+ like me a good percentage of your clients are a lot younger than you and they are social media crazy! They look at anyone who’s not on instagram like you’ve kicked a cat down the stairs.

The truth is you need to findable wherever your clients hang out! Don’t be stubborn because if you don’t move with the rapid pace of marketing you will be left scratching around for work.

Times are hard, I’m not denying that. Everyone should be turning a good wage and being rewarded for the graft they put in.

The point I’m making is most of these types of posts are rage bait for tradesmen, they want you in there arguing amongst yourselves about costs and rates and pitch trade v trade. It’s good for their instagram insights.

If that’s where you go to let off steam and get ya kicks then fair play you do you.

But from running my own construction business and being around many successful business owners none of them are wasting a second in the comments section of these rage bate post.

Maybe put that time and energy into growing your own business, just a thought.
