πŸ‘·β€β™‚οΈ OUT AND ABOUT WITH THE LOCAL TRADE

We were invited down to WHC Hire Services in Tewkesbury by Adrian and Sean for a look around the yard and a chat about what they offer.

It's always useful to see what equipment is available locally and, more importantly, meet the people behind the businesses we could be working with on future projects.

We're always looking to build relationships with good local companies and create a network of people we can rely on, and who can rely on us.

Thanks again to Adrian and Sean for taking the time to show us around.

Plenty of kit there that could come in handy on future jobs! πŸ‘€πŸ”¨

πŸ—οΈ ANOTHER BOX TICKED FOR S & J

We're pleased to have our CHAS certification in place.

For us, being a good building company isn't just about the work we do on site. It's also about making sure the business behind it is properly organised, compliant and operating to the right standards.

CHAS accreditation gives our clients and the professionals we work with additional confidence that we take Health & Safety, compliance and responsible working practices seriously.

It's particularly important when we're working alongside architects, structural engineers, developers and commercial clients, where demonstrating the right standards and procedures is increasingly important.

It's another step forward for S & J Building Works Ltd as we continue to build the business and develop relationships with other local professionals.

🧱 TOP 3 THINGS THAT MAKE A BUILDING PROJECT RUN SMOOTHLY

From our experience, the jobs that tend to run best usually have these three things in common:

1️⃣ Good drawings

Clear, detailed drawings give everyone a much better understanding of what needs to be built and reduce unnecessary changes once work has started.

2️⃣ Good communication

Things will come up during almost every project. The important thing is dealing with them quickly and keeping everyone, client, architect, engineer and builder on the same page.

3️⃣ Realistic budgets

Having a realistic budget from the start makes a huge difference. It's much better to understand the true cost before work begins than to try and make a project work on an unrealistic figure.

Get those three right and you've already given the project a much better chance of running smoothly.

What would you add to the list?

One thing we see quite often in construction is the assumption that the most expensive solution must be the best solution.

Sometimes it is.

Sometimes it really isn't.

Good building is about understanding the problem first, then finding the right solution for the property, the client and the budget.

That might mean:

πŸ”¨ Repairing rather than replacing
🧱 Reusing existing materials
πŸ“ Changing the approach before work starts
πŸ’‘ Finding a simpler construction method
🀝 Getting the right specialist involved early

Our job isn't to spend the client's money unnecessarily.

It's to use it wisely and deliver something we're proud of.

That's where experience really matters.

What's the best money-saving decision you've seen made on a building project? πŸ‘‡

Something I've been thinking about recently and I'd be interested to hear what other people in the industry think.

Are we expecting too much from skilled tradespeople for the rates we're willing to pay?

Everything has gone up fuel, vans, tools, insurance, training and the general cost of running a business.

At the same time, clients quite rightly want to keep the cost of their projects down.

But at some point, something has to give.

A good tradesperson isn't just charging for the hours they're on site. You're paying for years of experience, having the right tools, your own transport, insurance, training, problem solving and the responsibility that comes with doing the job properly.

So I'm genuinely interested

What do you think is a fair day rate for a good, experienced tradesperson in 2026?

And for the business owners, what do you think is a realistic profit margin once you've paid all the costs of actually running the business?

Interested to hear some honest opinions from both sides.
