Following on from last week's post on Historic Environment Scotland's audit of at-risk Angus flagstone roofs, here's a recent example of that heritage skill and material in practice.

Denfind Stone completed roof repairs at St Athernase Church in Leuchars, a historic listed building, using 20mm thick Carmyllie Stone Slates.

As the only source of Carmyllie stone slates in the world, and our stone is a direct match for the original material used on this and other historic buildings, allowing repairs to be carried out with the correct traditional roofing stone rather than a substitute.

The project was designed by Nicoll Russell Studios and built by G Brown Stonemasons.

As the audit made clear, the supply of authentic material is critical to keeping roofs like this standing. Denfind Stone remains committed to supporting that work.

Historic Environment Scotland's recent audit has confirmed what many in the industry already knew: Angus flagstone roofing is now a rare and at-risk feature, with fewer than 200 buildings in Angus known to retain it, out of only around 240 identified across Scotland.

Denfind Stone is the only supplier of genuine Angus flagstone roofing in the world, quarried and processed at Pitairlie. We have recently completed restoration work using Angus flagstone at Acheson House on Edinburgh's Royal Mile, Monimail Cemetery, and St Athernase Church in Leuchars, and have been approved to supply forthcoming restoration projects including the roof of the Great Hall at Edinburgh Castle and Abbot's House at Arbroath Abbey.

As this audit highlights, the specialist skills and material needed to maintain these roofs are becoming harder to source. Denfind Stone remains committed to keeping that supply, and the traditional knowledge behind it, available for the projects that need it.

Angus Sandstone continues to prove its versatility across both new build and renovation projects.

The client first specified 40mm guillotined walling stone with corners for their new self-build in Brechin, using it externally on the full-height gable.

The same guillotined stone was also used internally as cladding around their log burner, showing how the material carries through from exterior to interior application without losing consistency.

Pleased to see our Angus Sandstone featured on this new driving range facility for , on the Fife coast.

140mm sawn Angus Sandstone walling was specified for the build, giving the facility a natural stone finish that sits comfortably alongside timber cladding and standing-seam roofing.

It's a good example of how the same sandstone can be worked to suit a contemporary, functional building as easily as a traditional one.

The stone was supplied to Cartmore Building Supply as part of the build.

Great projects begin long before installation.

Union Street, Dundee is a significant public realm project that demonstrates what's possible when natural stone is considered from specification through to installation.

Every piece of Angus Sandstone used within the scheme has been quarried at Pitairlie before being processed adjacent to the quarry, giving full control over extraction, production and quality assurance.

The project incorporates bespoke paving, precision processing and a carefully considered laying pattern, reflecting both the technical requirements of the specification and the character of Dundee's industrial heritage.

As the square continues to take shape, it's rewarding to see months of planning, processing and craftsmanship come together on site. We look forward to seeing this landmark space completed and enjoyed for generations to come.

We're pleased to see Angus Sandstone featured on this contemporary self-build in Blairgowrie.

Designed by the homeowners themselves, the property combines clean, modern architecture with carefully positioned natural stone to create strong focal points across the elevations. The full-height feature gable and stone-clad façade demonstrate how Angus Sandstone can add texture, depth and permanence while complementing a contemporary design.

It's another example of how the same Angus Sandstone can achieve a completely different architectural character from project to project.

The timber kit for the home was supplied by , helping to bring the homeowners' vision to life.

Progress continues for this exclusive development of nine individually designed homes where our 140mm guillotined Angus sandstone walling has been specified.

The use of natural stone provides a consistent, durable finish that complements the character of the development while maintaining the authenticity of a traditionally quarried material. Every house on this project brings out a different character in our Angus Sandstone, depending on the cut and finish.

We're pleased to welcome Haylay Gahgan to Denfind Stone as our new Finance & Sales Administrator.

Haylay brings more than 25 years of experience in administration, people operations and organisational support, with an extensive background in the British Army, HM Forces and, more recently, as a Military Advisor with the Qatar Armed Forces.

Her experience in administration, compliance, process management and stakeholder support will be a valuable asset as she joins the team, helping to strengthen our finance and sales operations.

After 13 years with Denfind Stone, we're saying a fond farewell to our Finance Administrator, Neil, as he begins his well-earned retirement.

Neil has been a valued member of the team throughout a significant period of growth for the business, and we're incredibly grateful for his commitment, professionalism and contribution over the years. He will be greatly missed by everyone at Denfind.

To mark the occasion, we presented Neil with a piece of engraved Angus Sandstone featuring the Denfind Stone logo and a bowler - a fitting tribute to one of his greatest passions.

A keen and accomplished bowler, Neil recently won the District Pairs and will represent his club at the Scottish Championships in Ayr this August. He's also a two-time Club Champion, and we wish him every success on the green in retirement.

Moisture naturally enhances the colour and texture of Angus Sandstone, revealing a different aspect of the material.

When wet, the stone's natural tones become richer and more defined. As it dries, the colours soften to reveal a lighter appearance. It's one of the many characteristics that makes natural stone unique - its appearance continues to evolve with the conditions around it.

Fortunately, the Scottish weather gives us plenty of opportunities to appreciate both... often within the same day.
