Taken a liking to the olive green at Mosswell House?

Storage came first at Spur Cottage. Before a single colour was chosen, we planned two pantry zones with solid oak interiors, wide pan drawers and a built in bench, because a kitchen that does not work is never beautiful for long.

Only then came Farrow & Ball Inchyra Blue, a rich blue grey with a green undertone that shifts gently through the day as the light moves. The worktops are Silestone Ethereal Glow with Dekton Entzo on the island. The owner tells us the pantries are the most useful thing in the room.

Tea and toast with the family on a weekend morning. When we asked Anna about her favourite part of the kitchen, this was what she described.

This pantry sits beside the dining table at Mosswell House, with the kettle and toaster close to where everyone eats. It adds storage and another worktop beyond the galley, without needing an island.

Painted in the same olive green from The Little Greene Paint Company as the kitchen, it has a timber interior, reeded-glass side cupboards and space for crockery, cookbooks and breakfast supplies.

Anna wanted to keep separate spaces for family life. Placing the pantry here meant they could prepare breakfast in the room where they enjoy it together.

More storage, a larger fridge-freezer and somewhere for the washing machine and tumble dryer. These were all part of Anna’s brief for Mosswell House, alongside keeping the sink and plumbing where they were.

Our designer Zuzanna worked around the existing beams and used bespoke cupboard sizes to make use of awkward spaces. An alcove became a cupboard for stacked laundry appliances, while tall cabinetry brought the larger appliances and storage together away from the window.

The whole design was completed remotely, with time spent refining the layout, hob position and colours with Anna.

If you’re planning a kitchen with similar constraints, we’d love to hear what you have in mind. Get in touch through our website to talk through your plans.

“Don’t be afraid of colour!” was Anna’s advice when we asked about her finished kitchen.

At Mosswell House, she chose The Little Greene Paint Company Olive Colour (72) for the Shaker cabinetry, with warm wall colours, pale tiles and leathered quartzite alongside it.

Anna wanted the room to feel tactile, and that comes through in the materials: the softly textured stone, glossy tiles and burnished brass cup handles by Hendel & Hendel. Together, they give her the warmth and traditional character she was looking for.

Save this one if you’re gathering ideas for a green kitchen.

Meet Mosswell House, a London family home with a galley kitchen in The Little Greene Paint Company Olive Colour.

Anna loves traditional English interiors and wanted somewhere warm and calm, with plenty of storage for a family of five. She chose our solid wood Shaker cabinetry, with burnished brass handles by Hendel & Hendel, reeded glass and leathered quartzite worktops.

With three children approaching their teens, the family wanted to keep their separate downstairs rooms. We designed within the existing kitchen and added a pantry in the dining room, bringing extra storage and a breakfast worktop close to where everyone eats.

Take a closer look at the glass and brass detailing, followed by the pantry with its doors closed.

The island at Hearthstone Cottage sits directly beneath a steel roof lantern, so the centre of this Cotswold cottage kitchen is now the brightest spot in the house.

Our Period English cabinetry is painted in Farrow & Ball Old White around the walls, with the island in Minster Green to echo the planting beyond the bifold doors. The worktops are Quartzforms Ocean Lagoon with a fluted drainer, and every cabinet was measured and scribed to walls that have not been straight for a century.

One in five homes in England was built before 1919, and plenty of them come with ceilings well below two metres. We think that is something to celebrate rather than fight.

Our latest journal entry looks at how to design a kitchen around low ceilings and old beams. It covers why an off the shelf kitchen will not fit without compromise, how to plan storage that goes wide instead of up, and the extraction problem nobody warns you about.

Although newly built, Clonard Way was designed to have the depth and detail of a much older kitchen.

Our English Heritage cabinetry, painted in our exclusive Colours from History shade Statue, brings that character through raised panels, delicate beading and classic proportions. The floor-to-ceiling cabinetry also conceals a pantry and appliances, leaving the kitchen open and uncluttered.
