After nearly four years of waiting, tending, and almost losing hope, this gorgeous Hesperantha (formerly known as Schizostylis) has finally delivered its best display yet here at Assynt House! ❤️🌺

We have these beauties growing in two different spots in the garden, and both are looking absolutely stunning this year!

Hesperantha is a wonderful late bloomer, bringing a glorious splash of colour to the autumn garden. It’s not unusual to see these vibrant red flowers still going strong well into November, just when so much else in the garden is winding down.

I absolutely adore them, even though they can be a little tricky to please! It’s been a labour of love, with plenty of patience and a few moments of doubt along the way. But seeing them flourish like this makes it all worthwhile!

Sometimes the plants that make us wait the longest bring us the greatest joy. ❤️🌿

I spent ages watching this aster today. It was absolutely buzzing — honeybees, bumblebees and butterflies everywhere — and this peacock butterfly kept coming back, so of course I ended up filming far more than I meant to.

These are the moments I love most in a garden. Not just when something looks beautiful, but when it’s properly alive.

As a gardener and garden designer, it’s a big part of how I think about planting. Asters are brilliant at this time of year: lots of colour when the garden is starting to quieten down, and an important late source of nectar too.

Sometimes the best bit of a garden is simply standing still for a few minutes and seeing who turns up. 🐝🦋💜

Today I enjoyed the sky-blue flowers of Salvia bulleyana — delicate, graceful and almost disappearing into the evening sky. 💙

A wonderful plant for naturalistic planting, with a softness that belies its strength. Hardy, resilient and able to withstand wind and harsh conditions, it’s one of the strong performers for Scottish Highland gardens.

For a moment, it was hard to tell where the flowers ended and the sky began.

Honestly, my back is sore, my nails are permanently stained, and I spent half the summer arguing with slugs... but holding a tomato this ridiculously big makes me grin like a kid on Christmas morning. 🍅✨

From simple forms to a finished garden 🌿

Every garden design starts with a simple idea.

At the beginning of the process, we strip everything back to the essentials — simple shapes, strong lines and clear spaces. These early forms help us understand how the garden will work: where people will move, where they will sit, how planting will frame the space, and how the garden connects to the architecture.

As the design develops, these simple forms gradually become more refined. Planting areas are shaped, boundaries are defined, materials are introduced, and individual elements begin to emerge. Small details are added along the way, but always with the original structure and concept in mind.

The final garden may look detailed and effortless, but underneath it is a process of layering — form first, then function, then planting, materials and detail.

It’s a bit like building a picture: start with the composition, establish the big shapes, and then slowly add the details that bring it to life. 🌱
