Honestly, my back is sore, my nails are permanently stained, and I spent half the summer arguing with slugs... but holding a tomato this ridiculously big makes me grin like a kid on Christmas morning. 🍅✨
Gardening isn’t always glamorous, but these goofy little wins make every bit of hard work worth it.

From simple forms to a finished garden 🌿

Every garden design starts with a simple idea.

At the beginning of the process, we strip everything back to the essentials — simple shapes, strong lines and clear spaces. These early forms help us understand how the garden will work: where people will move, where they will sit, how planting will frame the space, and how the garden connects to the architecture.

As the design develops, these simple forms gradually become more refined. Planting areas are shaped, boundaries are defined, materials are introduced, and individual elements begin to emerge. Small details are added along the way, but always with the original structure and concept in mind.

The final garden may look detailed and effortless, but underneath it is a process of layering — form first, then function, then planting, materials and detail.

It’s a bit like building a picture: start with the composition, establish the big shapes, and then slowly add the details that bring it to life. 🌱

🌿 A year of transformation… and a few unexpected visitors! 🐦

Looking back at where this garden started and where it is now is pretty special!

The works have been staggered over the year, with the groundworks completed by Contractors and the planting done together with the owner, gradually bringing the design to life.

It hasn’t been without its challenges — a poor summer, working in stages, and a rather enthusiastic gang of seagulls pinching out the newly planted plants! 😂🌱

Thankfully, the seagulls have now calmed down and seem quite happy enjoying the little pond instead. 💦🐦

There’s still plenty of work in progress, but the bones of the garden are now there and the planting is beginning to bring everything to life.

One year on, and we’ve achieved so much. I can’t wait to see how it continues to evolve! 🌿✨

A little evening ritual… a slow walk around the garden, a few fresh-cut flowers, and suddenly the garden follows me indoors. It’s one of my favourite ways to end the day. 🌿

The beauty of soft edges… 🌸

One of my favourite plants for a gravel garden has to be Erigeron karvinskianus (Mexican Fleabane).

Its delicate daisy-like flowers weave effortlessly between gravel, rocks and paving, softening hard edges and creating a relaxed, natural feel. I love using it as an alternative to formal edging plants, allowing it to spill gently over borders and paths, bringing movement, texture and months of colour.

Despite its delicate appearance, Erigeron is surprisingly tough. Here in the Scottish Highlands, it thrives in well-drained soil, copes well with our unpredictable weather, and flowers continuously from late spring until the first frosts. It’s also loved by bees and other pollinators, making it as valuable as it is beautiful.

If you’re looking for a low-maintenance perennial that softens the landscape, fills gaps naturally and provides an abundance of flowers for months, Erigeron is hard to beat.

Sometimes it’s the smallest plants that make the biggest difference in a garden. 🌿🌸

A recent courtyard garden design for a client in Inverness, Scottish Highlands.

Designing smaller spaces is all about making every square metre count. Compact gardens often require the most considered design, where every element has a purpose.

This concept balances structure, texture and seasonal planting to create a private garden that feels calm, spacious and connected to nature.
