From traditional hand-carving to CNC cutting and 3D printing, we have many methods at our disposal for making one-of-a-kind shaped mirrors and we love working with our clients to produce something that stands out whilst also standing the test of time. Today we wanted to share a few shaped mirror projects that we’ve completed in the last year or so. These projects range from practical to whimsical, and every radius, bracket, and split batten has been carefully considered to make these striking bespoke shaped mirrors.

Made for the gym changing rooms in a private members club, these anti-fog LED-lit mirrors were designed to be mounted to a counter using metal rods that extend from the base and up through the back of the frame. We worked closely with our clients to develop this design, creating multiple prototypes to ensure they could withstand repeated daily use in a high-traffic environment. Finished in our imitation bronze, these mirrors have a warm and cool light setting that can be changed with the touch of a button.

This large overmantel mirror made the whole workshop swoon. Swooping curves, warm wood stain, and light antique mirror glass come together in perfect harmony to create a mirror that feels comfortable, familiar, and like it’s already a part of a well-established family home.

We love an unconventional shape for a vanity mirror, and this pebble-shaped mirror is no exception. Made of solid European oak, this large shaped mirror is fitted with a demister pad to ensure a steam-free experience no matter how hot the en-suite shower.

Hand-carved by master woodcarver Roy Martin, this mirror is like a portal to another world. Made to look like tree branches, every knot, shoot, and notch has been carefully considered and carved into being. Finished in our imitation bronze, we love the way the character of the frame catches the light and moves the eye.

Not just frames and mirrors ✨

From craqueleur finials to furniture legs, hand-painted screens to window treatments, and lacquered trays to textured accoutrements, our offering here at Patrick Ireland extends beyond just frames and mirrors. In fact, many of our finishes can be applied to almost any surface, and we regularly finish elements like headboards, lamp bases, panelling, stand-alone shelves, and cabinet doors to either match the frames or mirrors used in a design scheme or as one-off stand-alone pieces. We made this art deco-inspired screen as a room divider for a client project.

We loved this detailing, which was beautifully hand-painted in gold.

Another screen, this one made using antique mirror glass panelled in an imitation bronze frame. We love the foxing on this glass, which adds so much ambiance and depth.

Something quite different! This life ring was made for a London-based IT company. Hand-painted on timber, this life ring was mounted on a metal base to display as a stand-alone piece in their Farringdon office.

A second life ring was made to hang on the wall in their office.

We also had the pleasure of making these bespoke timber rings to fit in their charming round windows. This was such a fun project and our first time making porthole window treatments!

Simple yet beautiful, we adored this snow white stepped bespoke tray in a lacquer finish and have been keen to make more trays ever since.

Stunning silver - we finished this headboard in silver metal leaf to match other elements in this bedroom. Egg-and-dart moulding is a design classic, and for good reason! This repeating pattern of convex ovoids and grooved darts works as stepping stones for the eye to travel along, creating dramatic shadows and dimension that changes depending on the angle. Made using our egg-and-dart Charlbury Frame, this handsome mirror is drenched in our imitation bronze finish and we love the warm chocolatey result. 🤎

Wake up and smell the coffee ☕️

We loved this recent commission for our friend TunbridgeWells Coffee Roastery. We used an ash tray frame stained the same shade as my favourite dark roast and a brick red painted backboard to frame this Colombian coffee sack, which was procured by Peter on a recent sourcing trip. Mounted on a stiff board, we framed this without glass to ensure the texture of the canvas sack stayed at the fore, encouraging visitors to his roastery to reach out and touch the weave and knotted edges of this special keepsake.

Our new Pitted Finish has been making its way out of the workshop and into the studios of our clients. The more demure sibling of our Textured Finish, these seven Pitted shades move the eye and add dimension and depth to a frame design. This is a marvellous choice for accents like clips, brackets, slips and inlays, though the Pitted Finish would of course work beautifully as a full frame finish, too.

With September now behind us, autumn is well and truly in the air. We’ve put away our fans for the season - preserving them in deep box frames where they will be appreciated for their beauty rather than their utility - and have been fabric-wrapping frame inlays in the same way we’re wrapping ourselves in more layers on these chilly early mornings.

Here are a few special details and moments from projects we completed this past month. We’re looking forward to sharing more about these projects as we head into the final quarter of the year, and all the coziness that comes with it. 👉

Hand-wrapped tweedy-blue linen inlays in a limed oak frame. 💙

A perfect fit! The inlays are snugly fit inside the frame, which is now ready for its mirror glass and backboard. ✨

Speaking of inlays, we were able to debut a new finish we’ve been developing - our faux tortoise - as an inlay on an octagonal mirror, which was fit alongside multiple layers of hand-cut mirror glass.

The end result was a real showstopper of rich tones, texture, and visual splendour, and we’re really keen to see where this special mirror ends up. 🤎

After a sunny trip to Centre Court at Wimbledon, these beautiful fabric fans that Abbie bought in Kenya retired and are now looking forward to a life of leisure on a wall somewhere. 🪭

Photographing these fans reminded us of the iconic elephant portrait in Brooklyn Beckham’s photo book (iykyk). The light antique mirror mount meant that the fans were very backlit and it took us a minute to figure out how best to photograph and edit them so you could get the full impact of their beauty.

In the end, we hope we did the fans justice as they’re really remarkable pieces. You can find 2 of the 3 still available for sale in The Mount Room…
