A kitchen island should be sized around the room, not simply made as large as possible.

Around 900mm can be a useful lower planning point in a restricted area, while a main working aisle will often feel more comfortable at 1000–1200mm. If the island includes seating, allow approximately 600mm of worktop length per person as a starting point.

Remember to test the layout with drawers, appliance doors and stools in use. If comfortable clearances cannot be maintained, a peninsula may be the better design decision.

A completed kitchen designed around everyday comfort.

For this bungalow renovation in Exmouth, the homeowners chose Nobilia Senso cabinetry in a soft Jade finish, complemented by Caesarstone Organic White quartz worktops.

The L-shaped design makes excellent use of the room, while adapted working heights, a lowered gas hob, accessible storage and carefully positioned wall units ensure the kitchen is comfortable and practical to use. A continuous quartz shelf, NEFF appliances, under-cabinet lighting and stainless-steel accents complete the contemporary look.

Designed and supplied through our Kitchen Kit Exeter showroom.

OpenHaus 2027 did not disappoint! ✨

First stop: the brand-new Ballerina-Küchen showroom, and wow… it was absolutely breathtaking! A real highlight for us was the stunning new Urban Moss door front. 💚

Then, just 45 minutes down the road, we headed to the nobilia Küchen showcase — and it was another wow! 😍 Highlights included the beautiful new oak carcass colour and the gorgeous new Senso door in Berry.

We can’t wait for our samples to arrive and to start bringing these exciting new finishes and colours to kitchen designs across the South West. ✨

So many inspiring ideas, and we’re already looking forward to what’s ahead! 🤍

Prize winner update! Look who’s received her prize! 🎉

Lorna was the lucky winner of our Bosch washing machine competition, and judging by this brilliant photo, she’s rather pleased with it!

Lorna told us: “Thank you so much once again for this fabulous prize. I am thrilled, you have really helped our family.”

We’re absolutely delighted that the prize has gone to a home where it will make a real difference. Enjoy, Lorna! 💙

This South Zeal project began with a familiar problem: earlier ideas mostly replaced the existing kitchen like for like.

Kitchen Kit Exeter instead reworked the layout, moved the main cooking zone to a new island and created clearer preparation, washing and storage zones.

The result is a brighter, more practical kitchen that still respects the cottage’s original stone features.

What is the one part of your current kitchen layout you would change?
