What’s your thoughts on EVs? I have a leased Nissan leaf and I love it. I enjoy the ease of the drive, the extra features (heated steering wheel and seats which I can set from the app in the morning before getting in the car) and the fact I don’t have to go to a petrol station anymore.

Then in August I got rid of my diesel van, it served me very well for around 10 years but I wanted to avoid the £120 a month cost of filling up with diesel - plus it was drinking oil!

I got myself a 7 seater car which can be used as a van, great now I have a toddler.

In my experience here’s some positives and negatives of what I’ve experienced

✅ cheap to run - electricity tonight is really low so it’s going to cost me 42p to charge my car giving me a range of 100 miles
✅ low on Maintennance - no oil to worry about
✅ charge anywhere - we have plugged into a travelodge through the window and even the back of a petrol station 🤣 not ideal the chargers weren’t working at the time but it’s led to some funny experiences
✅ for around 6 months we managed to charge for free at a ‘broken’ charger - it wasn’t communicating but was still giving out electric - you never get that at a petrol station
✅ re-fuel whilst you sleep overnight at home
✅ waiting in traffic knowing your not kicking out smelly fumes

❌ range anxiety - you jump in it says 150miles when you drive actual miles could be anything from 100 to 150miles depending on many factors (hills, speed, temperature)
❌ lack of public chargers - there’s a lot more planning involved and even at times that doesn’t help as the chargers could be broken!
❌ the cost of public chargers! Tonight I’m charging at around 1p per kWh - fast public chargers can be £1 per kWh so instead of 42p for 100 miles I could pay £42!!
❌ difficult to charge at home unless you have a drive
❌ Apps - a lot of EVs is controlled via apps - checking the vehicle, setting charge times and charging in public. These apps can be slow, not respond or crash

Overall I’m very happy with my EV because the money I’m saving over my diesel van is huge.

Do you know what the signs of an electrical burn/fire are?

💡Usually it’s the smell that you recognise first - it’s the plastic burning and it smells a bit fishy.
💡Sometimes you can even see discolouration in the plastic where it’s got really hot.
💡the other one is heat - if the plastic enclosure/switch is hot to touch then something could be loose and a burnout/fire could happen soon.

Where’s the most likely places for this?
1. Shower isolator (pull cord or sometimes on the wall)
2. Shower itself - actually in the shower
3. Oven isolator
4. Old sockets

If you’re not sure get it checked out. This was my call out today to a shower that’s been smelling for a few days and I got the call when it’s stopped working. Luckily the cable was long enough and I could just replace the connector block so they don’t have to spend out big big just before renovating the whole bathroom. - call at 10:20am fixed by 11:40am 👍 sorted within an hour and half of the call

Today was in two parts wearing two hats as I actually have two businesses. Head Electrical and a Property Management company (Murland Kerth) which looks after HMOs in Plymouth.

This morning I went to a Damp and Cold homes Expo in Plymouth - great for networking, making new connections and learning a lot. I also got some great community connections to help tenants who may be lonely, depressed or struggling with money in my properties. I will send them links to help them out.

This afternoon I was finishing working on a shop in central Plymouth.

Today was an ‘office day’ - I spent the morning fitting guttering to our house then had an interview at 3pm to be a board game demonstrator (my main hobby). Finally I finished the day with a call out to a light that wasn’t working - when the customer fitted a new light they managed to screw through the lighting cable - so repair was made and now it’s all working
Note: picture is from google because I’m rubbish at rembering to take pictures!

Tomorrow is a full days training for my IPAF (International Powered Access Federation) license. Through my career I have worked at many heights, the worst being 8 storeys up on a block of flats measuring windows from the outside!

This view is a one I see almost weekly for works that I carry out on a factory in Plymouth

Whilst I still find my way around the business page I thought I'd do an introduction here;

Who am I - My name is Ben and I've been an Electrician for over 15years. I have worked all across the UK on commercial jobs and also locally on domestic jobs.

I specialise in EICRs for property sales, commercial property and landlords. I also specialise in fault finding.

I have worked on universities, shop re-fits, factories, luxury accommodation in London and much more.

My interests away from work include boardgames, hiking, snorkelling, paddle boarding and exploring different corners of the world with my family.

The photo is of the mountain range around Mount Toubkal in Morocco which I summited in April 2024
