Creating a place to gather

As renovations to this beautiful old farmhouse began to draw to a close, our clients turned their attention to the garden.

The setting already had plenty of character — quaint, established and full of charm — but it was missing a few functional spaces that felt truly personal to them.

One of their priorities was somewhere they could sit, dine and entertain while looking out across the lawn. With that in mind, we created a generous semi-circular paved seating area, framed by a substantial timber pergola above.

The long-term vision is for wisteria and climbing plants to mature across the structure, softening the timber and creating a sheltered, atmospheric place for dinners, morning coffees and evenings spent outdoors.

It’s a good example of how a carefully considered addition can change the way a garden is used without taking away from the character that was already there.
For us, that’s what thoughtful landscaping is about — understanding how people want to live in their garden, then creating spaces that feel like a natural part of it.

🌿 What This Season Has Taught Our Gardens

Gardens across Kent and the South East have had a lot to contend with this year — from saturated ground and heavy rainfall to prolonged dry spells, sun-scorched lawns and cracked clay soils.

These changing conditions have been a useful reminder that a successful garden needs to do more than look good in perfect weather. It should be able to manage water, recover from heat and remain practical throughout the seasons.
In our latest article, we explore what this year has taught us about:

🌱 healthy soil and clay ground
🌧️ drainage, levels and water movement
🌿 resilient planting choices
☀️ brown lawns and seasonal dormancy
🛠️ the hidden construction beneath a lasting garden

The strongest gardens are created when all these elements are considered together — not as separate jobs, but as parts of the same landscape.

Every detail in a garden should have a purpose.

Following on from our recent pergola project at this beautiful Sevenoaks farmhouse, we wanted to share two smaller features that helped complete this corner of the garden.

The first was a traditional reclaimed brick well, designed as a simple still water feature.

Our clients already enjoyed sitting here with their morning coffee, but the space lacked a focal point. Rather than introducing movement, they wanted the quietness that still water brings—a place where the reflections of the sky and surrounding planting create a calm, peaceful atmosphere. Sometimes the simplest features have the greatest impact.

Alongside this, we built a handcrafted timber bridge across the existing stream.
While its purpose was practical—providing easy access for mowing and general maintenance—it also sits naturally within the character of the garden, making the stream feel like an integral feature rather than an obstacle.

Interestingly, this small addition has already inspired conversations about the next phase of the garden, with plans beginning to take shape for a full cottage garden stream restoration.

One of the things we enjoy most about projects like this is seeing gardens evolve over time. Thoughtful improvements, built in stages, often create the most characterful outdoor spaces.

A Garden Built Around Everyday Living

Some gardens don't need to be complicated to be beautiful.

For this project, our clients wanted a complete refresh of their outdoor space—a garden that felt clean, organised and easy to maintain, while providing somewhere they would genuinely enjoy spending time.

Working with the colour palette and ideas they had already chosen, we focused on creating a layout that was both practical and timeless. A porcelain pathway draws you through the centre of the garden to a new entertaining patio and future summer house, while crisp brick detailing ties every part of the project together.
Alongside the paving, we installed new fencing, built raised planting beds to soften the hard landscaping, created generous lawns and carefully blended every new feature into one cohesive garden.

What we particularly enjoy about projects like this is collaborating with our clients. Every family uses their garden differently, and our role is to combine their vision with our experience to create a space that works beautifully for years to come.
The result is a garden that's smart, low maintenance and, most importantly, one our clients were delighted to call their own.

If you're planning a garden transformation in Tunbridge Wells, Sevenoaks or the surrounding areas, we'd love to help bring your ideas to life.

Patio Restoration | Before & After

A well-built patio is designed to last—but over time, dirt, algae, moss and the British weather can hide its true character.

A patio we installed over 15 years ago, a great example of the difference a professional clean can make. By carefully removing years of built-up grime, we were able to reveal the natural beauty of the paving once again, leaving the whole garden feeling brighter, fresher, and ready to be enjoyed.

Patio restoration isn't just about appearance. Regular maintenance can also:

🌿 Restore the original colour and texture of your paving.
🌿 Improve safety by removing slippery moss and algae.
🌿 Help protect your investment by extending the life of your patio.
🌿 Refresh your entire garden without the cost of replacing existing paving.

Sometimes, the biggest transformations come from restoring what's already there.

📩 If your patio has lost its sparkle, we'd be delighted to help bring it back to life.

🌿 Project in Progress | Sevenoaks

Every garden has its own story, and this beautiful period farmhouse in Sevenoaks deserved a feature that felt completely at home within its surroundings.
Our clients wanted a sheltered space where they could relax, dine with family and friends, and, in time, enjoy the beauty of wisteria and climbing plants weaving their way across a bespoke pergola.

To bring that vision to life, we're creating a generous semi-circular paved seating area that complements the property's grand yet cottage-style character. The gentle curves and carefully chosen materials are designed to feel as though they've always belonged.

This is just one element of a wider project we're undertaking at the property, alongside a bespoke timber bridge crossing the existing stream and a traditional brick well water feature—both of which we'll be sharing soon.

We can't wait to show you the finished space once everything comes together.

🌿 Thoughtful landscaping isn't just about building features—it's about creating spaces that become part of a garden's story.

📩 If you're planning a bespoke feature for your own garden, we'd love to hear your ideas.

A smoother finish, in more ways than one 🌿

Using a fine grade topsoil, we carefully reworked the surface before reseeding to create a more even, consistent finish.

Not only will this improve the overall appearance of the lawn, but it also makes day-to-day use far more enjoyable — no more bumpy mower rides.

It’s a simple process done properly, with results that will continue to improve as the new lawn establishes.

If your lawn is feeling uneven underfoot, we’d be happy to help.

A simple transformation that makes a big difference 🌿

This small project in Tunbridge Wells involved converting a well-used veg patch into a clean, blended lawn area to better suit the clients’ needs.

We prepared the ground, levelled the area, and laid fresh turf to seamlessly tie it into the existing garden — creating a space that feels open, cohesive, and easy to maintain.

Not every project needs to be large to have an impact — sometimes it’s the smaller changes that make a space work exactly how it should.

If you’re thinking about reworking part of your garden, we’d be happy to help.

Another recent project where a patio space was given a new lease of life — both visually and practically.

We began by removing sections of the existing paving and failing foundations, before carefully re-levelling and relaying new slabs to create a solid, even surface throughout. The entire patio was then repointed with the addition of a new final step, bringing everything together with a clean, refreshed finish.

A key part of this project was the addition of a new raised bed, designed not just for planting but to act as a subtle and effective barrier — an important consideration for a family with young children.

It’s a great example of how thoughtful design can improve both the look and safety of a space, without compromising on style.

If your patio is starting to feel tired or uneven, we’re here to help.
