🛑 Some information to check when employing a Roof Cleaner 🛑
Any chemical product used to kill or control biological growth like moss, algae, and lichen on a roof in the UK must be authorized and registered as a biocide under the HSE Biocidal Products Regulation (GB BPR).
Why HSE Authorization is Required
• Legal Compliance: Under UK law, if a chemical claims or is intended to control living organisms (like fungi, algae, or moss spores), it falls strictly under the Biocidal Products Regulation.
• Product Standard: DDAC (Didecyldimethylammonium chloride) and other quaternary ammonium compounds used for soft washing must hold a valid Health and Safety Executive (HSE) / Control of Pesticides Regulations (COPR) approval number to be legally marketed and applied for that purpose.
• Professional vs. Amateur Use: Many high-strength DDAC biocides (such as 40% active formulations) are legally restricted to professional use only, meaning the operator must have proper training and certification to apply them safely and lawfully.
Key Considerations for Roof Biocides
• Not All Chemicals Need It: If a generic chemical or cleaning agent is used purely for general dirt rinsing without any biological killing claims, it doesn't fall under BPR rules—though treating a roof specifically for moss/algae does require a compliant biocide.
• Environmental Protection: Approved products carry strict guidelines to prevent harmful runoff into surrounding gardens, drains, or aquatic life.
