So let's talk about the risks around trees at the moment.

Apparently we are due for yet another hot spell, and that means the trees around us are going to be incredibly stressed. Worse, Devon and Somerset have a lot of trees.

When trees are stressed, they start off lightly shedding leaves. After all, the grass is brown, and soon many of the leaves will be brown. This is to preserve water.

Losing leaves isn't the only option for a tree, though. They can lose entire limbs.

In Scunthorpe, there are already warnings about sitting under trees, especially as most of the country is still in drought. The BBC news article is here:

The bigger the tree, the more likely it is to react to stress by dropping large branches. It isn't easy to check whether a tree is likely to drop branches, though. Most defects are well hidden, and even experienced tree surgeons will struggle to determine whether a branch will crack off.

Trying out a new way of doing tree inspections!

Drones are a fantastic way of quickly checking over a tree, especially during the nesting season. However, to do this legitimately in the UK, you need two licences: a flyer's licence and an operator's licence. These are both issued by the CAA.

Once you have these, it's a fun way to check out a tree! Today I was testing it out and ensuring I could see fungal growth, dead branches and nests. While a drone does have its limitations, especially in particularly dense trees, it's another useful tool when checking tree health.

It also records video for the record and can be used to quickly check height.

Such a lot of chipping done today! This is the result of a heavy leylandii prune and the resultant brash.
