We're continuing our search for a Labour Coordinator to join MAC Surfacing, and we're keen to hear from people who know how to keep things organised when everything around them is changing!

We're looking for a Labour Coordinator who enjoys a challenge, thinks on their feet and isn't fazed when the day's carefully organised plans suddenly change.

Working alongside our established Operations Team, you'll play an important role in keeping our surfacing projects running smoothly.

PROJECT UPDATE | WATERFRONT CAR PARK, BRIERLEY HILL

Our surfacing team were recently on site at Waterfront Car Park in Brierley Hill, carrying out works on behalf of Midland Metro Alliance.

The works involved a combination of footpath surfacing, splitter islands and a small section of carriageway, with different materials and laying depths required across the various areas.

The team were installing AC6 surface course to the footpaths and splitter islands, alongside road base and binder course works to the carriageway.

With a mixture of smaller, detailed sections to complete, hand laying played an important part in getting the material into place and achieving the required finish.

It was good to get out on site, see the progress firsthand and catch up with the team while they were busy getting the job done.

WE’RE HIRING | CLASS 1 LOW LOADER DRIVERS

MAC Surfacing is looking to add experienced Class 1 Drivers to our team, with a particular interest in candidates who have experience operating low loaders and moving heavy plant and machinery.

You’ll be supporting our operations by safely transporting plant and equipment to and from sites, so experience within surfacing, highways, construction or plant movement would be a real advantage.

We’re ideally looking for candidates who:
🔹 Hold a valid Class 1 (C+E) licence
🔹 Have experience with low loaders and/or transporting plant
🔹 Are confident working around heavy machinery and active sites
🔹 Take pride in looking after their vehicle, equipment and loads
🔹 Have a professional, safety-first approach to their work
🔹 Are ideally based within approximately 20 miles of our Tipton head office

This week marks the first ever National Cadets Week, celebrating the young people and adult volunteers who make up the Cadet Forces across the UK.

Led nationally by the the week is shining a light on the impact of the Cadet Forces, with a particular focus on “Cadets Save Lives” highlighting the first-aid and lifesaving skills cadets learn and the confidence to put those skills into practice when they’re needed most.

We were pleased to support the Dudley Detachment, Staffordshire & West Midlands (North Sector) Army Cadet Force, with the donation of lifesaving training equipment to help with their ongoing first-aid training.

Last night, our Managing Director Jake Wherton had the pleasure of visiting the detachment to present the equipment to the cadets and see first hand the work that goes into their training.

Jake was joined by our own Stuart Currill, who, outside of his role at MAC Surfacing, volunteers his time as an Adult Instructor with the Army Cadet Force, helping to guide and support young people throughout their cadet journey.

With more than 137,000 cadets supported by around 28,000 adult volunteers across the UK, National Cadets Week is a great opportunity to recognise not only the skills being developed but also the people giving their time to make that training possible.

To support those adult volunteers in its employ, MAC Surfacing Ltd have pledged to give them 10 days paid volunteering leave.

We’re proud to support our local Dudley Detachment and hopefully play a small part in helping the next generation develop skills that could one day save a life.

WE’RE HIRING | LABOUR COORDINATOR

We’re looking for a Labour Coordinator to join the team at MAC Surfacing and help keep our busy surfacing operation moving.

Right people. Right place. Right time.

Sounds simple… until a programme changes, someone calls in sick and another site suddenly needs additional labour!

This is a fast-paced role at the heart of our operations, working closely with our Operations Team, Contracts Managers, Supervisors and Site Teams to coordinate our workforce across multiple projects.

What does the role involve?
🔹 Coordinating operatives across multiple surfacing projects
🔹 Managing holidays, sickness and arranging cover
🔹 Responding to programme changes and labour requirements
🔹 Ensuring operatives have the correct competencies
🔹 Identifying potential labour shortages
🔹 Keeping teams informed and records up to date

Who are we looking for?
Someone highly organised, proactive and confident communicating with people at all levels.

You'll need to think on your feet, solve problems under pressure and stay calm when the plan you had at 8am isn't necessarily the plan you have at 10am!

Experience in construction, highways or road surfacing would be an advantage, but isn't essential. The right attitude, organisational skills and ability to adapt are just as important.

Sometimes, one of the biggest problems on a surfacing job isn't how fast the paver is moving. It's when it stops.

You might think that stopping a paver for a few minutes wouldn't make much difference. But when you're working with hot asphalt, consistency is everything.

Every unplanned stop has the potential to affect the finished surface.
Here's why
🌡️ Temperature matters. Asphalt starts cooling from the moment it's produced. When paving is interrupted, the material already laid continues to lose heat, which can affect the available compaction window.
🚜 Ride quality can suffer. Stopping and restarting a paver can introduce small irregularities in the surface, potentially affecting the smoothness of the finished road.
🚛 Deliveries make a difference. A steady supply of asphalt helps maintain a consistent paving operation. Delays between wagon loads can disrupt that flow, particularly on larger schemes.

Of course, stopping a paver isn't always avoidable. Site conditions, access restrictions and unexpected challenges are all part of the job.

But it does highlight something that's often overlooked.

A successful paving operation isn't just about the machine laying the asphalt. It's about everything happening around it.

From material deliveries and paving speeds to rolling patterns and communication between teams, every stage needs to work together.

And sometimes, it's the smallest interruptions that can have the biggest impact on the finished result.

If you’ve been following us over the last few months, you may have noticed we’ve been on something of a recruitment drive across several areas of the business.

We’re pleased to say that drive has been a successful one and we’ve recently welcomed a number of new faces to the MAC team. 👋

Starting a new role always comes with plenty to learn, new people, new processes and in our case, a very busy surfacing operation! We hope all of our new starters are settling in well and already beginning to feel part of the team.

For us, recruitment isn’t simply about filling vacancies. As the business continues to grow, it’s about bringing in good people who can grow with us, strengthen the team and play their part in what comes next for MAC.

A transport network is only as good as the infrastructure around it.

There's a lot happening across the West Midlands transport network at the moment, with the Metro continuing to expand and testing underway on the Wednesbury to Dudley section of the Black Country extension. When we talk about projects on this scale, attention naturally goes to the big milestones, new tram lines, stops and ultimately the first passengers travelling on them.

But getting there involves a huge amount of work that isn't always as visible. Roads have to meet new infrastructure. Existing highways need adapting. Access has to be maintained. And surfacing has to work around tracks, kerbs, junctions and all the other elements already built into the scheme.

We've seen that first hand at MAC, having delivered surfacing works as part of the Midland Metro programme.

This photo is from our work on the scheme and looking back at it while seeing the latest stages of the Metro expansion progressing is a good reminder of how many different teams and individual packages eventually become one finished transport network.

For us, it might be a surfacing package.

For the people who eventually use it, it's simply part of getting where they need to go.

And that's the bigger picture behind a lot of the work our industry delivers.

Nobody appoints a surfacing contractor because they want another contractor to manage.

They appoint one because they need a part of their programme taken care of.

And there’s a difference.

It’s not just about getting asphalt on the ground. It’s knowing the right people and plant will arrive when they’re supposed to, that everyone understands the programme and that communication doesn’t disappear the minute something changes.

Because things do change.

Access gets delayed. Programmes move. Weather has other ideas. Another trade overruns. A problem appears once the existing surface comes up.

For the client, the value is in having a team that deals with those things rather than simply passing the problem back up the chain.

That’s something we try to get right at MAC.

With our own surfacing crews, operated plant, planing capability, transport and in house workshop support, we can keep more of that coordination within the business, with experienced people behind it who understand what needs to happen on site.

Ultimately, a good surfacing contractor shouldn’t create another job for you.

They should take one off your list.

What can everyday road resurfacing learn from Formula 1?

Probably more than you might think.

A resurfacing project on the A889 in Scotland has been getting attention again recently after using technology more commonly associated with Formula 1 racetracks and international airports. Rather than relying solely on traditional surveying and fixed milling depths, the project used high-speed LiDAR scanning to build a detailed digital model of the existing road. That data could then be used to control variable depth milling, removing the right amount of material at different points along the road.

The result was a much more precise approach to preparing the surface before the new asphalt was even laid.

And that’s the part we find particularly interesting.

In surfacing, we naturally spend a lot of time talking about the finished surface. But increasingly, technology is allowing more of that quality to be engineered before the paver arrives, understanding the existing road better, controlling what is removed and making more informed decisions about what needs to go back.

The A889 project went on to win the 2025 Highways Award for Best Use of New Technology and it raises an interesting question for the industry. If technology developed for environments where millimetres really matter can be successfully transferred to the public highway, how much more could we see techniques like this become part of everyday resurfacing in the future?
