MAC Surfacing Limited is a family-run road surfacing business that was established in 2004. The company has since grown to service a variety of customers from small and medium-sized businesses to large bluechip companies and public authorities. Based in the West Midlands, the company is ideally located to serve neighboring counties with easy access to major motorway networks, placing the company at the central heart of the industry. We are available on a 24-hour basis, 365 days of the year – customers of all sizes have learnt to rely on MAC’s unique offering, nationwide. Although 20 years of our existence has been focused around the hire of services to contractors, our business has naturally secured works on a contracting basis due to our enviable reputation. We therefore exist to serve the needs of the industry with our customer focused ability, to collaborate and offer full self delivery of our services either on a hire or contracting basis. With the recent heatwave and many of us making the most of the bank holiday outdoors, it’s a timely reminder of just how important safe, accessible active travel routes are for our communities.

At MAC Surfacing, we’re proud to be playing our part in the ongoing Burnt Tree Junction improvement works, where our team has recently been installing blue coloured surfacing for the new cycle lane infrastructure.

Projects like these are about far more than surfacing, they’re about creating safer, more connected communities, encouraging healthier travel choices and investing in infrastructure that supports long term sustainability.

As more local authorities continue to prioritise active travel, it’s exciting to see these routes taking shape and moving closer to completion helping more people confidently choose cycling as a safer, more accessible way to get around and enjoy their local area.

Whilst many of us were enjoying a well earned break over the bank holiday weekend, our workshop team were still hard at work behind the scenes keeping the wheels turning at MAC Surfacing.

Machine downtime is valuable time and our workshop made the most of it by carrying out essential inspections, maintenance and repairs to ensure our fleet is safe, reliable and ready to hit the ground running for the busy week ahead.

A huge thank you to Adam Feely, our Workshop Controller and the wider workshop team for their continued hard work, commitment and dedication. It’s often the behind the scenes efforts like these that make all the difference to keeping projects moving smoothly and our operations performing at their best.

The work our teams deliver on site is only possible because of the incredible support happening in the background and this is a perfect example of that teamwork in action.

Could AI finally change the future of UK road maintenance?

The highways sector is evolving fast and technology is becoming impossible to ignore.

Recently, our Director, Marc Copson has been exploring how AI could help streamline processes within our own back office operations at MAC Surfacing improving communication, efficiency and ultimately enhancing the customer journey from enquiry through to project completion.

That conversation got us thinking…

If AI can improve the experience behind the scenes, how could it also improve the experience for the end user within the surfacing industry...the road user?

From AI powered pothole detection and predictive maintenance to smarter asset management and real time road condition monitoring, the industry is beginning to shift from reactive repairs to proactive planning.

Instead of waiting for roads to fail, local authorities and contractors now have the opportunity to identify deterioration earlier, reduce disruption, improve response times and create longer-lasting road networks.

But technology alone isn’t the solution.

It still takes experienced surfacing teams, quality workmanship and operational expertise to deliver lasting results on the ground.

We believe the future of infrastructure will come from combining innovation with practical industry experience using technology to support better decision making, smoother delivery and a better experience for everyone using our roads every day.

The question is are we moving quickly enough? Could AI help us solve the 'Pot hole crisis'?

At MAC Surfacing, it’s not always about roads...

Recently, our team completed a footpath repair and replacement project, helping improve a well used public walkway and making it safer, smoother and more accessible for the local community.

From highways and carriageways to pedestrian pathways, we understand that every surface matters. Public footpaths are used daily by families, school children, commuters, and local residents so keeping them in good condition is just as important as the roads we travel on.

Meet Michelle, one of the key people behind the scenes helping keep MAC Surfacing running smoothly.

Michelle joined MAC after nearly 20 years in the transport industry, where she progressed from customer service into management. After becoming a mum, she made the decision to find a role that better suited family life and that’s when she found MAC.

💬 “I knew the skills I’d built over the years would transfer straight across.”

Starting just before the pandemic, Michelle quickly had to adapt learning new systems, supporting different departments and even stepping into Accounts, all while working from home.

Today, Michelle supports our Contracting and Estimating teams, managing enquiries, material orders, supplier coordination, and customer liaison.

💬“No two days are the same.”

One thing that stands out about Michelle is her mindset:

💬 “I dislike seeing money wasted, I view it as my budget, not just MAC’s.”

A standout moment came during a time-critical job in Lichfield. When a supplier unexpectedly broke down, Michelle acted fast sourcing an alternative supplier and keeping the project on track. A decision that avoided major delays.

Her secret to staying organised?
“Snooze emails and reminders and clearing my inbox daily for a fresh start.”

And what makes MAC different?
