🔥 POOR DRAW? THE PROBLEM MIGHT BE AT THE TOP 🔥
Called out today for a chimney sweep where the fire had been struggling for draw.
The chimney itself was swept through, but the real problem turned out to be the cowl at the top of the chimney, heavily blocked with debris and soot.
A blocked cowl can seriously restrict airflow and stop the chimney drawing properly, which can lead to smoke spilling back into the room and the fire not burning as it should.

Our customer was struggling with poor draw on their open fire. A closer inspection revealed the problem: a badly blocked chimney cowl!

🔥 Open fire swept and smoke tested today

Another chimney cleaned out and checked ready for use.

With an open fire, it’s not just about removing soot. A smoke test afterwards helps confirm the chimney is drawing correctly and gives us a chance to spot any obvious issues before the fire is put back into regular use.

🔥 Fire Brick Replacement & Stove Service 🔥

This stove needed some attention after the internal fire bricks had become damaged and worn.

The old bricks were removed and the new fire bricks were measured, cut and shaped by hand to get the correct fit inside the firebox. 🧱

The stove was then swept, cleaned and checked over ready for use again.

📸 Just to note: the “after” photos were taken before the baffle plate was refitted, which is why it isn’t shown in position in the pictures.

Fire bricks play an important part in protecting the body of the stove from excessive heat, so replacing damaged ones is well worth doing before the burning season gets properly underway. 🔥

🔥 Not Every Chimney Sweep Is Straightforward! 🔥

On this one, access meant I couldn’t sweep in the usual way, so the rods and brush had to go directly through the stove pipe itself.

Using a specialist wrap-around cover meant I could keep everything sealed up while sweeping, helping contain the soot and dust while still giving the flue a thorough clean. 🧹🔥

It’s a good example of why every stove and chimney needs to be assessed individually. Sometimes you have to adapt the setup, but the goal stays the same: a clean, safe flue ready for use.
