🏚️ BEFORE ➡️ AFTER

Chimneys take an incredible amount of punishment from the British weather.

And on an older property, previous inappropriate repairs can sometimes make matters worse.

A proper restoration isn’t simply about making the chimney look better.

We need to understand what’s failed, why it’s failed and which materials are appropriate before putting it right.

The finished result should look like it belongs to the building.

That’s what sympathetic restoration is all about.

🪟 DON’T AUTOMATICALLY REPLACE IT. RESTORE IT.

Original timber windows are an important part of the character of many period properties.

And old doesn’t automatically mean beyond saving.

Where appropriate, traditional joinery can often be carefully repaired and protected rather than simply ripped out and replaced.

It’s a principle that applies to so much restoration work:

Preserve first. Replace only when necessary.

Because once an original historic feature has gone, it’s gone.

🔨 CRAFTSMANSHIP IS IN THE DETAIL

The photographs everyone loves are the dramatic before-and-afters.

But this is where those transformations actually happen.

Skilled hands.

Traditional materials.

Careful preparation.

Patience.

And understanding the building you’re working on.

Proper restoration shouldn’t be rushed.

Sometimes the greatest compliment we can receive is when someone looks at the finished repair and can’t immediately tell which part we’ve worked on.

It simply belongs.

💧 WHEN OLD WALLS CAN’T BREATHE

Damp in an old house isn’t always as straightforward as it first appears.

Traditional solid-wall buildings were designed to manage moisture differently from most modern houses.

Problems can occur when breathable lime plaster and other traditional materials are replaced or covered with inappropriate modern finishes.

So simply covering a damp patch isn’t necessarily solving anything.

The question we always want answered is:

WHY is the wall damp?

Find the cause first. Then choose the appropriate repair.

🏡 YOU CAN ONLY CHOOSE ONE…

❤️ 300-year-old cottage — wonky walls, exposed beams, creaky floors and bags of character.

OR

👍 Brand-new house — straight walls, modern comforts and virtually no maintenance.

Which one are you choosing? 👇

We’ve got a feeling we already know the answer on this page… 😄🏡

🚨 OLD HOUSE MISTAKE #1 — CEMENT vs LIME

One of the problems we regularly encounter on traditional buildings is inappropriate cement mortar.

Many older solid-wall properties were constructed using lime.

Traditional lime mortar is breathable and allows moisture to move through the building differently from hard modern cement.

Using inappropriate materials can contribute to deterioration of the surrounding stone or brickwork.

The important lesson?

Don’t automatically assume a modern material is better for an old building.
