More Space. More Possibilities.

Sometimes the home you already love simply needs more space.

A well-designed extension can transform the way you use your property, whether that means creating a larger kitchen, adding a new living area, introducing an extra bedroom or simply giving your family more room to grow.

At RM Builders & Contractors, we deliver high-quality domestic extensions across Devon and the surrounding counties. From single-storey and rear extensions to side and two-storey builds, every project starts with understanding what our clients want to achieve.

An extension should feel like a natural part of the original property rather than something that has simply been added to it. That’s why we pay close attention to materials, rooflines, proportions and finishes, ensuring continuity between the existing building and the new space.

Just as importantly, we consider how the extension will work day to day. Natural light, insulation, drainage, energy efficiency and the flow between rooms all play a part in creating a space that is comfortable, practical and built for the future.

Throughout the project, our experienced team works closely with homeowners, architects and the relevant authorities where required. We keep our clients informed at every stage, manage the build carefully and always aim to minimise disruption.

With decades of experience behind us, our focus remains the same: skilled workmanship, careful project management and an extension that genuinely enhances your home.

Looking Back - St Martin’s Church Hall, Liskeard

Older buildings have their own character – and looking after them properly often means knowing what to preserve, what to repair and what can be carefully improved.

That was very much the approach at St Martin’s Church Hall in Liskeard.

A major part of the project involved the roof. Existing slates were carefully removed and, wherever possible, retained for reuse. Our team also carried out repairs to timber, stonework and leadwork, using methods and materials appropriate to the building.

It’s often the details that make the difference on an older property. New cast iron rainwater goods were chosen to sit naturally alongside the existing architecture, while careful internal redecoration gave the building a fresh lease of life without taking away the character people know and value.

We also introduced something distinctly modern: solar panels.

These were incorporated discreetly, helping to improve energy efficiency while respecting the appearance of the building. For us, that balance is important. Caring for an older property doesn’t mean it can’t adapt to modern life – it simply means those changes need to be considered properly.

Whether we’re working on a historic church, a listed building or a much-loved period home, the principle is the same. Understand the building first. Retain what can be retained. Repair properly. And make improvements with the long term in mind.

Because the best restoration work shouldn’t erase a building’s history. It should help write its next chapter.

LOOKING BACK | Weir Quay

Some projects give us the opportunity to work with buildings that tell a much bigger story.

At Weir Quay, RM Builders & Contractors have been involved in the conversion of the historic Tamar Union Tin Smelting Works, transforming this important Grade II listed site into high-quality residential homes while preserving the character and fabric that make it so distinctive.

The story of the site stretches back to 1849, when the Tamar Union Tin Smelting Works was established. It continued operating as a tin smelter until 1896 and originally formed part of a larger industrial complex alongside a neighbouring silver and lead smelter. Together, they were known as the Tamar Smelting Works.

Its history didn’t end with the closure of the smelter. Over the years, the buildings took on new roles, including use as an estate workshop. In the early 20th century, parts of the complex were even used for commercial jam production.

That long and varied history has left its mark on the buildings, making their conservation an important part of the Weir Quay project.

Working with a Grade II listed property requires a very different approach from a new build. Existing materials and historic details need to be understood and respected, while the building itself must be carefully adapted to meet the demands of modern living.

For RM Builders & Contractors, projects such as Weir Quay are about finding that balance – preserving an important piece of our region’s industrial heritage while giving these remarkable buildings a new purpose for generations to come.

A kitchen has to do much more than just look good.

It’s one of the hardest-working rooms in any home, often used from first thing in the morning until last thing at night. Getting it right means thinking carefully about how the space works, as well as how it looks when everything is finished.

At RM Builders & Contractors, that planning starts well before the new kitchen goes in. We look at the layout, the available space and the services required, as well as any structural changes that could make the room work better for the people who use it every day.

There’s also a lot that needs to come together during the build. Plumbing, electrics, plastering, flooring, tiling and decorating all have their place, and managing those stages properly makes a real difference to both the process and the finished result.
And because a kitchen refurbishment can have a big impact on everyday family life, we understand the importance of keeping things organised, communicating clearly and making the process as straightforward as possible.

We may be known for some much larger construction projects, but the principles don’t change with the size of the job.

Careful planning. Skilled workmanship. Attention to detail. And a kitchen designed to be lived in for many years to come.

Looking Back - Cholhouse Farmhouse

Some buildings can be repaired. Others need to be carefully brought back to life.
Cholhouse Farmhouse is a 17th-century thatched cottage, traditionally built from cob and rubble stone with lime render. Following extensive fire damage, there was a very real challenge ahead: how do you restore a badly damaged historic home without losing the character that makes it special?

As a Grade II listed building, simply replacing everything with new wasn’t an option – nor would we have wanted it to be.

Working alongside the appointed surveyor, Conservation Officer and other specialists, we carefully assessed what remained. Wherever possible, original cob walls, timbers and traditional finishes were stabilised and repaired. Where elements couldn’t be saved, we used appropriate materials and traditional methods to reinstate them.

It was painstaking work, but that’s often what older buildings require. Understanding how they were originally constructed – and how those materials behave – is every bit as important as knowing how to rebuild them.

The finished farmhouse retained the character and appearance of the o
riginal building while once again becoming a safe, practical family home.

We’re very proud of projects such as Cholhouse Farmhouse. They represent an important part of what we do at RM Builders & Contractors and the experience we bring to period properties, listed buildings and older homes across Devon.

Because when you own a building with history, sometimes the greatest skill lies in knowing what not to change.

A great bathroom should feel effortless. Getting it to that point takes experience.

There’s a lot happening behind the finished surfaces of a bathroom. Plumbing, electrics, ventilation and waterproofing all need to work together, while the layout has to make good use of what is often one of the smaller spaces in the home.

That’s why we approach bathroom refurbishments with the same care and planning we bring to much larger projects.

Before work begins, we consider how the space will be used, what needs to change and how each stage of the build fits together. From there, our team can manage the different trades involved, from the initial preparation and services through to tiling, decorating and those final details that bring everything together.

Just as importantly, we understand that we’re working in someone’s home. Good organisation, clear communication and consideration for the people living there are every bit as important as the quality of the finished work.

Whether we’re creating a new family bathroom, adding an en-suite or refurbishing an existing space as part of a larger renovation, the principle is the same: do the job properly, pay attention to the details and create something that will serve the household well for years to come.

Looking Back | Church of St John the Baptist, Marldon

Some buildings carry centuries of history, and working on them brings a responsibility to protect that heritage while ensuring they remain practical for generations to come.

We’re incredibly proud to have carried out a major heritage renovation at the Grade I listed Church of St John the Baptist in Marldon, near Paignton. With a history stretching back centuries, this remarkable building required exceptional care, traditional craftsmanship and meticulous attention to detail throughout.

Our work included removing the existing timber staircase and restoring access via the original stone tower staircase. We also lifted and repaired the floors, installed new Devon stone tiles and introduced a modern heating system. In addition, fully compliant disabled WC facilities were created to make the church more accessible for its congregation and wider community.

Protecting the historic interior was central to the project. Loose fixtures were carefully removed and stored, while important features including altars, tombs, medieval screens, plaques and stained glass windows were protected throughout the works.
Projects like this demonstrate the breadth of experience at RM Builders & Contractors. Whether we’re restoring a listed building, renovating a historic property or delivering a modern construction project, we understand that quality craftsmanship and attention to detail are essential.

Today, the church benefits from improved facilities while retaining the historic character and atmosphere that have defined it for generations.

If you’re planning a heritage renovation, listed building project or specialist restoration, we’d love to discuss how RM Builders & Contractors can help.

Looking Back | Westering

Some projects prove that great construction isn’t just about creating beautiful buildings—it’s about building a better future.

We’re incredibly proud to have been part of Westering, an award-winning sustainable home nestled within Dartmoor National Park. Designed to generate more energy than it uses, the property demonstrates that environmentally responsible homes can also be architecturally stunning and built to the very highest standards.

Working on a project like Westering required meticulous attention to detail, expert craftsmanship and a shared commitment to sustainability. From carefully selected natural materials to the seamless integration of energy-efficient technologies, every aspect of the build was completed with respect for both the environment and its spectacular setting.

The project went on to receive a RIBA Regional Award, recognising the quality of the design and construction.

Whether we’re building an innovative eco-home, restoring a listed property or creating an extension for a growing family, we bring the same pride, care and commitment to every project we undertake.

If you’re planning your next building project, we’d love to hear from you.

Looking Back | Staddon House

We’re incredibly proud of every project we complete, but it’s always a special privilege to work on a listed building.

Our work at Staddon House involved carefully preserving the character and history of this beautiful property while seamlessly incorporating modern elements to ensure it remains practical, comfortable and ready for many years to come. It’s a balance that takes experience, craftsmanship and real respect for the building itself.

The finished project was recognised with a Devon Historic Buildings Trust Conservation Award, something we’re immensely proud of and a testament to the care and attention that went into every stage of the work.

Whether we’re entrusted with a nationally recognised heritage building or helping a family transform their home, we bring the same commitment to quality, detail and craftsmanship to every project.

If you’re planning a renovation, extension or restoration, we’d love to hear about it.
