A lot has moved on since our last update at Holly Cottage.
The SWIP internal wall insulation system, plasterboarding and plastering are now complete upstairs, with bathroom panelling currently underway. On the ground floor, the existing floor has been insulated and screeded, with overlay boards and underfloor heating pipework now installed.
The staircase frame is in, the external drainage has been completed, and the lime render to the front elevation is finished.
Flooring has also started this week, with distressed engineered oak being installed upstairs, waterproof oak in the bathroom, and slate flagstones downstairs to tie in with the existing kitchen floor.
The next stage will see the slate window sills fitted, flooring and staircase works completed, followed by skirtings and architraves ready for decorating. We’ll then move on to the bathroom installations, second-fix electrics and completion of the air source heat pump system.
With the insulation upgrades and SWIP system now incorporated throughout the property, the new air source heat pump should also deliver a much more efficient home and significant long-term savings for the client.
It’s great to see Holly Cottage moving firmly into the finishing stages after such extensive structural, roofing and internal works.

A lot has changed at Dartmoor Dental since our last update.
Following the stripping of the roof, we uncovered historic fire damage dating back to 1964, requiring extensive repairs to sections of the main roof structure. Existing trusses and rafters have been carefully repaired and retained wherever possible, with new timber introduced sympathetically where required.
The bay window roofs have also been carefully stripped, with the existing slates retained for reuse.
Alongside the structural repairs, the parapet works have progressed significantly and the Code 7 leadwork to the valleys, gutters and parapets is now well advanced, including a number of complex details formed and welded on site.
With the structure secured, felting and battening has continued across the roof and large areas of the slate covering are now being reinstated alongside the inlay solar panels.
Elsewhere on the project, removal of the defective cement render has been completed, structural repairs have continued and preparations are now underway for the new lime render.
Working on such a prominent listed building in the centre of Tavistock requires a careful and considered approach throughout, retaining as much of the existing fabric as possible while providing robust long-term repairs.
Plenty still to come, but it’s great to see just how much the building has progressed over the last few weeks.

The Granary — a bespoke holiday let project completed by Westcountry Construction.
This was a client’s vision that we helped bring to life, transforming the space into a small traditional-meets-modern retreat incorporating a snug, bed deck mezzanine, kitchen/diner, main bathroom and master bedroom, together with an outside space featuring a large gravel area and wood-fired hot tub.
A lot of the building’s character comes from the use of reclaimed materials, with many of the key features made on site. Highlights include solid oak floors to the bedrooms, new lime plaster and pointing in place of the old cement, a bespoke mezzanine with bespoke oak stairs, microcement flooring to the main kitchen, dining and snug areas, a dual-vision wood burner, new timber windows, slate worktops and solar Velux windows.
The project was also designed to be highly energy efficient, with an air source heat pump and underfloor heating across all floors.

Barn renovation progress by Westcountry Construction.
Since our last update, the roof has now been completed, the upstairs studwork and underfloor heating have been installed, and the first fix plumbing and heating works have been completed.
We have also installed the ducting for the air source heat pump, carried out the new internal drainage ready for connection to the external drainage, fitted the new hardwood windows, and installed the new SWIP internal wall insulation system upstairs together with the vaulted ceiling insulation.
Boarding and plastering are now underway, with the next phase including the bespoke oak staircase and the ground floor plastering works.
Good to see this barn renovation continuing to take shape as the project moves on from the major structural and roofing stages into the internal build and finishing phases.

Phase one complete on this large renovation and extension project.
We last shared this project while works were progressing across the single-storey extension, double-storey extension, garage works and full renovation to the existing property.
Since then, a lot has changed.
Phase one is now complete, bringing the main build, renovation works and key internal areas together. This stage has included major structural work, external finishes, roofing, cladding, glazing, internal spaces and finishing details.
There’s still more to come later in the year, with phase two planned to include the landscaping, outside spaces, bespoke kitchen and utility.
A great project to be involved with, and one we’re looking forward to continuing into the next stage.

Major repair works are now underway at Dartmoor Dental, a listed building requiring a careful and considered approach throughout.
The project includes extensive roof repairs and recovering works, repair of badly deteriorated parapets, new lead work preparation, and the integration of inlay solar panels. Once the roof was stripped, we uncovered further issues including historic fire damage, which has now been carefully assessed and factored into the repair strategy so the wider roofing works can continue.
At the same time, removal of defective cementitious render exposed further structural issues to parts of the building fabric, allowing the appropriate remedial structural works to begin alongside wider stabilisation works.
Over the coming weeks, roofing and structural works will continue ahead of the new joinery and lime render.

Progress update from one of our current barn renovation projects by Westcountry Construction.
What started with strip-out works, opening up new window positions and removing the ceilings quickly revealed that previous roof works carried out in the 1990s were poor, with much of the timber work to the original part of the barn needing replacement.
We are now installing a new cut roof with 6 conservation Velux windows, while retaining and restoring the original A-frames and fully vaulting the upstairs ceiling to maximise light and space.
Now into week three, the replacement roof structure is in place, new natural slates are being installed in place of the original asbestos man-made slates, and internal works are continuing with joist strengthening, preparation for upstairs underfloor heating and the next studwork stages.
