Condition survey of Grade II* listed Jacobean Manor house, now used as a religious retreat. We have been undertaking condition surveys in the South west for over 30 years and are always happy to see a friendly face watching us undertake our work!

Condition surveys are useful for the custodians of historic properties to stay informed about the condition of the structure; ensuring timely maintenance can be undertaken to prevent potentially costly issues arising in the future; and enabling property owners to plan effective repair and improvement strategies. They can also be a useful tool for potential purchasers of historic buildings

As part of our latest series of guidance blogs we have posted on the various grants available from the Department for Culture, Media and Sport, administered through Historic England and the Architectural Heritage Fund, for heritage building projects.
In general all of the funds give priority to historic buildings at risk in areas of highest deprivation, and for projects which give most community benefit. The funds are: - Heritage Revival Fund; - Heritage at Risk Capital Fund; - Places of Worship Renewal Fund.
Jonathan Rhind Architects are regularly asked by clients to assist them in securing funding for heritage building projects and we can advise/guide clients on different ways forward. Take a look at the website for more info and get in touch if you would like to discuss a potential project.

Another sketch by Part I Architectural Assistant Evie – view from the fire tower showing the Bristol skyline. The fire tower dates from the early 20th century; one of its uses, the drying of fabric hoses, now affording views of the city.
Evie, who started at the practice as an Architectural Apprentice 5 years ago, is now studying for her Part II qualification at The University of West of England (UWE) on a part time basis while working

The JRA team recently undertook a fascinating CPD tour of Bullace Hill Living History in the Monmouthshire countryside. The 10 acre agricultural site has been returned to how it would have been in the 16th century, with stone barns, hedges, fences, farmhouses, cottages, workshops, orchards and meadows. Traditional farming practices are undertaken, period fruit and veg are grown and every year Bullace Hill is brought to life for a short time with people living and working the site as they would have in Tudor times.

The team saw the historic buildings we care for today in use as they would have been when they were built. It was a real insight into the interaction between the landowner, tenant farmers and other workers and the buildings they occupied. An unusual, educational, thought-provoking day as well as an opportunity for the team to get together

This latest poolhouse in our pool/summerhouse series is buried in the hillside with only expansive glazing, rubble stone masonry and the feature living Brise Soleil visible. The façade sweeps round in a circular geometric design mirroring the soft undulations of the grassed roof, and the building is absorbed by the landscape. From the pool there are panoramic views south over the valley, creating a truly tranquil space to enjoy the beautiful Somerset setting. The new poolhouse is a contemporary addition to the historic farmhouse, which was repaired, upgraded and had sensitive additions to rationalise previous ad hoc extensions
