Cliveden Conservation Workshop

St Jude on the Hill in Hampstead Garden Suburb is opening its doors for Heritage Open Days so the public can see and learn more about the conservation of 57 paintings by artist Walter Starmer in the church's nave.

Two interns from Pakistan, supported by the Heritage Forum, are working with our project team, led by Polly Westlake, to clean and stabilise the wall paintings.

Now halfway through, visitors will get the chance to see the work in progress first-hand. Our conservators will be on hand to talk through the original materials and techniques used by Starmer, and the conservation methods being used to return these masterpieces back to (close to) their original vibrancy.

Large-scale photos will help to show visitors before/after conservation. There will be a chance to examine some of the specialist materials trialled and used by the team.

For younger visitors, there will be games to find images among the paintings, and to get creative with colouring their own versions of the wall painting scenes.

St Jude's is also hosting a free concert and hymn sing-along with refreshments from 18:30 on the 13th, which visitors are welcome to stay for.

Talks on the current project to conserve the paintings in the nave of St Jude on the Hill. Conservators will show visitors the progress made to date, and explain materials and techniques being used. Arts and crafts for young visitors.

We are carrying out repair work to the National Trust Lansdowne Monument, also known as the Cherhill Monument, in Wiltshire. The majority of the repair work to the Grade II-listed structure, which dates back to 1845, is hoped to be completed by the end of 2026.

Our next Heritage Lime Mortars Training Day for Specifiers is taking place on 17th September at Reading Abbey Ruins.

This training day is going to be extra special as we are being joined by researchers from Sheffield Hallam University, who will be giving an introduction to Nano Electro Application Technique (NEAT). This patented technique significantly improves the pe*******on and consolidation performance of nanolime on fine-grained limestone, a longstanding challenge in heritage conservation.

Our full-day CPD training day combines classroom theory and discussion with a supervised practical session. The programme covers the full lime cycle, material specification, mixing and application, with hands on pointing and consolidation practice, and an introduction to NEAT alongside a practical walkthrough of the conditioning, application and decommissioning process.

The Restoring Pugin Project (The National Lottery Heritage Fund Nottingham Cathedral is progressing beautifully. Conservators are busy in the Lady Chapel stencilling Pugin's intricate decorative scheme onto the ceiling and frieze. Conservators are now gilding the yellow lines painted on the frieze.

Our Bath Workshop Project Manager, Tim Heale, visited Blackdown Education Partnership yesterday as part of their initiative 'Where Creative Subjects Can Take You'.

Tim spoke to students about careers in heritage conservation, sharing insights from his own experience and bringing the subject to life with a practical demonstration. Students also had the opportunity to get hands-on with activities themselves.

It was a great chance to inspire the next generation and raise awareness about different heritage skills.

Last month, Tom Flemons had the pleasure of joining Nick Cox Architects and Bristol Cathedral at the 2026 Church Transformation Awards Evening, where the restoration of the Seafarers' Chapel floor at Bristol Cathedral was announced as the winner by the Diocesan Advisory Committee (DAC).
