Feeling nostalgic! St Andrew's Church, Burnham-on-Sea is celebrating 200 years of its Wren altarpiece angels in Somerset. Back in 2010, these stunning angels spent time in our Bath Workshop being conserved and repaired. We cleaned and waxed them, refixed their wings and re-modelled and created missing digits, before refixing them on new pedestals back at the church. Happy 200th!

St Andrew's Church is marking 200 years since the angels with a royal past came to Somerset.

Spotted something shiny new on Gravel Walk in Bath? โ˜Ž๏ธ

We've been working with blacksmith James Osborne of Oz Forge to restore the K6 telephone box at the end of the Gravel Walk, near the Royal Crescent in Bath, for Bath Preservation Trust.

The old paint has been removed and it has been repainted in the official colours. We have also cleaned off the graffiti, replaced almost all of the glazing and welded in a new glazing bar.

Over winter, rain seeps into tiny cracks in stone, marble, terracotta and concrete. When it freezes it expands, again and again, until cracks widen and fine details break away.

Our Winter Covers come in two options:

โœ… Three-Layer Thermal Protection: windproof, waterproof and insulating, to stop freeze-thaw damage.
โœ… Single-Layer Protection: waterproof marine-grade canvas with UV protection, ideal for larger or more complex pieces and available in a range of colours.

Happy World Architecture Day! ๐Ÿ›๏ธ Here's a look back at some of the remarkable historic buildings and sites our team has had the privilege to care for, and a reminder of the heritage skills needed to safeguard the future of our architectural treasures.

Our conservation of the two historic marble fountains at Waddesdon Manor (owned by the National Trust and managed in partnership with the Rothschild foundation) has been shortlisted for the 2026 Public Statues and Sculpture Association (PSSA) Marsh Award for Excellence in the Conservation of a Public Sculpture or Fountain.

Both fountains are Grade II listed, date from around 1720 and are attributed to the sculptor Giuliano Mozani.

The faithful restoration of the North Fountain was a collaborative effort between Cliveden Conservation and fountain engineer Mark Oliver. The statues have now been successfully stabilised, and the overall condition of the fountain is improved.

The South Fountain, a group of nine marble figures centred on Proserpina and Pluto, has also been conserved by our Decorative Arts team. Its sculptural elements have now been stabilised and reinstated, marble fragments collected by house staff over the years have been reattached, and the corroded metalwork has been treated.

The appearance of both fountains has been greatly enhanced, and their water displays can now be seen across the gardens again.

Congratulations to the other projects on this year's shortlist.

Join us at Nottingham Cathedralam on 22 September for a site visit into our Pugin Project The National Lottery Heritage Fund

Since 2024 we've been uncovering and reinstating A.W.N. Pugin's original decorative scheme, redecorated at least seven times since the cathedral was built in the 1840s. The day includes talks from our project team, a tour of the cathedral, and a chance to get up on the scaffolding in small groups.

Autumn is here, and that means it's time to think about winter protection for garden statuary.

Our Conservation Winter Covers are essential for protecting garden statues, valuable pieces of sculpture and outdoor decorative stonework from weather damage caused by frost, snow, excessive periods of rainfall and fluctuating temperatures during the colder months.

Please get in touch for more information and to arrange a site visit.
