Making kitchens look brand new and completely up to date is the best part of our job, along with surprising our clients with the quality of the end result

It is always worth painting a kitchen and updating the handles, it will instantly look refreshed and completely different. What if though, there are a few dated areas, that even if painted, might let it down?

With a little bit of joinery magic, we’re able to transform even the most dated cabinetry.

This is the first part of a series of posts, showing exactly what can be done with the trickier areas of an older kitchen, with a little bit of vision and a lot of expertise.

MATCHING ‘DRESSERS’

Often made from the same cabinetry as the kitchen, 20 odd years ago they were quite the thing, not so much now.

Two dressers, each reworked, one in Newbury the other in Fairford. In both cases, the upper cabinetry has been streamlined. New, bigger matching doors have also been made and everything painted to match the rest of the kitchen.

Yes, it’s a lot of additional work. Is it worth it? I think so.

Neither kitchens would have looked as modern and contemporary without doing so.

Never give up on that tired, brown kitchen, with a little bit of work it can look completely brand new. All for a lot less than a buying a kitchen, and thankfully, without as much chaos.

Please message for details of our work and a for a free no obligation estimate of what might just be possible with your own kitchen.

Tiling today.

The new marble effect laminate surfaces have already been fitted along with a new sink and tap. Installing the modern metro tiles along with a proper windowsill is another step towards transforming this tired, dated, brown kitchen into something more chic, and elegant.

A few more photos from today. The little bespoke bookcase has been fitted and the boiler cupboard is now complete with its handmade door.

All finished and looking a million miles from the original white and grey new build kitchen.

The cabinets have been painted in the colour equivalent of Farrow and Balls ‘Dibber’, an earthy olive green. It’s a lovely colour, which has elevated the whole space, (along with the gorgeous Carrara quartz and bronze handles.)

So calm, elegant and very grounding, definitely a kitchen to be proud of.

Please PM me for details of our kitchen refurbishments. We have one spot available for that new Christmas kitchen…

A nearly finished, new build kitchen in Shrivenham.

Originally white, with grey worktops, it was typically bland, so the brief was to add character and colour.

THE DETAILS:

• The island has been extended to allow for seating, using Scumble Goosie Georgian bead panelling, two w**e racks and an existing cabinet from Howdens

• A useful integrated recycling bin, also from Howdens, has also been fitted into the island in place of one of the standard cabinets.

• New ‘end’ panels have been made and fitted to the wall units and fridge surround to give the kitchen a more finished look.

• The original grey laminate worktops have been removed and new Carrara quartz has been installed by Anything Stone

• Two of the original cabinets from the rear of the island have been re-fitted in the utility along with a hand-made new boiler cupboard.

• Everything has been painted in the colour equivalent of Farrow and Balls ‘Dibber’ and fitted with new American bronze, knurled handles, from The Handle Studio Ltd

Back on Thursday to fit a little, bespoke, wall-mounted bookcase and a hand-made door for the boiler cabinet, which matches the originals.

My lovely 1950’s, two drawer chest of drawers, or it could be a lovely bedside table will soon be for sale.

More fiddly-faffing today but it’s been so enjoyable, and became more colourful as the day progressed. The circus stripes on the sides of the drawers make me smile every time I open them. The drawers are the same colour internally.

It’s been good to use of some of our leftover paints. This is mix of 5% sheen cabinet paint for the drawers and carcass and lots of match-pots for everything else:

Farrow and Ball
Dibber
Jitney
Etruscan Red
Incarnadine

Zoffany
Hessian Green

Coat Paints
Pampas
Rocky

A little more to do tomorrow, just tidying up in places, but just goes to show what you can do with a sad looking brown cabinet with a really nice shape.

Please PM me for details.

Some photos of the gorgeous quartz installation last week by Anything Stone
A massive transformation already from the original grey builder grade laminate.

Prior to templating, we’d extended the island and moved some of its original cabinetry to the utility room, where a boiler cupboard is also being built. The island is now enormous, it now includes an integrated triple bin and w**e racks, and has plenty of room to seat three or four comfortably. There were shallow cabinets to the rear before, so no overhang for seating.

This will be another lovely, soon to be ‘Dibber’ kitchen which was partly painted last week. It’s a lovely, grounding colour.

The doors are currently being painted, then we have a boiler door to fit, which has been hand made to match the others and a small wall hanging book case to add a little interest to an awkward gap.

Six weeks turned into eight weeks. Our break was a little longer than we anticipated but very much needed.

For a little while, I especially had been incredibly tired. Too much heavy lifting for far too long without a rest had caused a string of injuries my body was slow to recover from. My brain was also overwired, self employment is constant, I needed a bit of quiet time to recharge.

We haven’t had a holiday since 2019, which is far too long. The long break over the summer has done us both good. We’re back to work now with a lot more energy. Two kitchens are currently prepped for worktops, one of which we’ll start painting on Monday.

They’re very different. The first is quite large and in a brand new home, it lacks character so we’ve added some of that already. The second is tiny, very tired and slightly broken, I love those though, they’re always the biggest transformations.

Anyway, some of my favourite projects from the last 8 years, most were ‘brown’ kitchens, a fair few had black worktops, some were previously painted but all were a bit dated.

Never underestimate a brown kitchen, With a bit of magic it can be completely transformed like each of these were.

Feel free to PM or WhatsApp for details of our refurbishments.
