We’re delighted to welcome Mike Maryann to the Robseal Roofing Solutions team.

Mike joins as our first Contracts Manager and will be managing the various roofing projects alongside our Director Rich, liaising with the clients, coordinating the work programme and forecasting materials.

With over 20 years ‘on the tools’ experience across almost all roofing types, Mike joins us after spending the past 2 years as a Contracts Manager for a London based commercial roofing company.

Outside of roofing life Mike is kept busy with his 4 sons, dog, and managing his local rugby team, Chineham RFC.

You’re a welcome addition to the team Mike, welcome aboard!

As we head into the warmer months you can be sure that sporadic heavy downpours will test your roof’s drainage systems.

There are many types of drainage and the right one for your roof makes a big difference. Here’s a quick guide to the most common types:

🔵 Gutters & downpipes: The classic and most common for homes in the UK. Gutters sit along the edge of your roof and channel rainwater down into downpipes, directing it safely away from your foundations. Great for pitched roofs but remember to make sure they are cleared of blockages regularly.

🔵 Internal drains: Common on flat roofs, these sit in the middle of the roof and funnel water through pipes inside the building. They’re hidden away but problematic should they develop a leak.

🔵 Scuppers: These are openings in the parapet wall (the low wall around a flat roof) that let water escape through it into a hopper head. Simple, effective, and low-maintenance.

🔵 Siphonic drainage: A modern system that uses negative pressure to suck water off the roof quickly.

🔵 Green roof drainage layers: If you have a green roof, a special drainage mat sits beneath the plants to move excess water away while retaining just the right amount for your plants to thrive.

This Woking home has been built out of a former air raid shelter. An amazing property that protrudes from the ground with a domed roof. And that domed roof needed our assistance.

After the removal of 60 tonnes of earth, the Robseal team got to work on installing a new single ply warm roof with 150mm thick insulation.

The unusual shape of the roof and semi-circular window required out-of-the-box thinking to ensure the roofing material was well fitted and smooth.

60 pieces of material were welded together to create the custom fit needed ahead of the sedum roof that the customer will be adding later.

We loved the challenge of this unique property and can’t wait to see it once the green roof is established!

Valley gutters used to be a big and expensive job to repair and replace.

Traditionally crafted in lead, these gutters would require detailed carpentry before the lead is fitted (which can only be laid in maximum sizes of 2m, making this a long and laboured job all round!).

Single-ply roofing membrane has transformed the speed, ease and cost of fitting or replacing a valley gutter on your roof. A 10m valley gutter can be fitted in just half a day compared with the minimum two-days that lead would take to fit.

We’ve seen this time and time again and it’s a costly oversight.

Here’s the truth about the state of your roof. Just replacing the roofing material might not be enough.

Until a roofing specialist like Robseal can fully assess your roof and take core samples of the substrate (that’s the foundational layer that your outer roofing material sits on), it’s almost impossible to tell whether it will be a case of replacing your roofing material or reconstructing your roof.

Water damage to the substrate will start to rot the wood and weaken it over time. If your substrate is sound, our team can overlay your existing roof with our single-ply membrane that will provide you with a long lasting and hard wearing roof.

If your roof is visible from your property and you’re looking for a smooth aesthetic finish, we sometimes recommend that we fit a barrier board between your existing roof and the new single-ply membrane to create a smooth finish.

Ask any roofer and they’ll be sure to tell you that their most frequently used app on their phone is the weather app!

There are a few weather conditions that make the work of roofing impossible and naturally rain downpours are one of those - which makes the job of programming our work an interesting challenge.

With these factors outside of our control, we’ve learnt to be excellent in communication with our customers, teams and suppliers. We don’t overcommit, make promises we can’t keep and give honest updates to the best of our knowledge.

We can’t rely on the weather forecasts and so we work all year round (not just the warmer months) and plan our work as much as possible to the weather variables. One of our latest projects sees us returning to Royal Berks Hospital to repair this roof area at the front of their listed building.

We’ll be removing the damaged roof and assessing if there is any damage to the substrate underneath.

Their new roof will be made with a strong single-ply membrane that is designed to withstand all weather conditions and is set with appropriate drainage to ensure there is no persistent water buildup.
