A New Chapter on the Farm!

This North West Leicestershire project was designed as a new build retirement farmhouse, replacing two smaller former farm workers’ dwellings.

The brief was driven by an important moment in the life of the farm. After many years of farming, the owners were preparing to retire and pass the running of the farm on to their children. However, they weren’t ready to leave the farm behind.

The new home provided them with a place to live on the farm, close enough to remain involved and lend a hand when needed, whilst allowing the next generation to take the farm forward.

The result was a substantial new home designed around their retirement lifestyle, with a number of very personal requirements incorporated into the design including an indoor home gym, resistance swimming pool, glass topped well feature and a purpose built greenhouse for their prize winning cactus collection.

For us, projects like this are about much more than designing a house. They are about understanding the people, the place and the changing needs of a family, and creating architecture that supports the next chapter of their lives.

The part that you don’t see! 👀

When you see a finished building, it’s easy to assume that the design simply arrived at that point, but some of the most important work happens long before the first detailed drawing is produced.

The concept design stage is where ideas are explored, challenged, refined and sometimes completely discarded. Sketching, tracing and repeatedly drawing over ideas might look like a simple process, but it is often where the foundations of a quality piece of architecture are established.

For us, there is real value in putting pencil to paper, quickly testing proportions, form, movement, materials and how a building might sit within its surroundings.

It isn't always glamorous, and most clients never see it.

But perhaps that’s the part of architecture you don’t see, the hours of sketching, questioning and refining that ultimately lead to the design you do.
Good architecture rarely happens in one drawing. It evolves.

The World Architecture Day celebration comes to a close.

Today, Elliot is wrapping things up, and taking the reins by plunging us into the icy waters of Scandinavia with Snøhetta’s breathtaking project, Under.

Located on the rugged southern coast of Norway, this isn't just a building, it's Europe's very first underwater restaurant, doubling as a marine research center. Half-submerged in the sea, it completely redefines how architecture coexists with nature, inviting people to step beneath the waves and look out into the deep blue ocean.

Throwback Thursday!

A look back at an earlier replacement farmhouse project in Derbyshire. The proposal involved the demolition of a derelict existing farmhouse and its replacement with a new home that took inspiration from the character and proportions of a traditional rural farmhouse, whilst introducing a distinctly contemporary architectural approach.

Rather than simply replicating what was there before, the design explored how traditional forms, materials and craftsmanship could be reinterpreted for modern living, creating a home that felt rooted in its rural setting, but unmistakably of its time.

A project that reflects an approach we still strongly believe in today: understanding the context, respecting the past, and finding a thoughtful way to move it forward.

We’re delighted to share a glimpse of a new country house design in Warwickshire, replacing an existing dilapidated farm dwelling with a thoughtfully designed, contemporary rural home.

The design represents a modern interpretation of the traditional country dwelling, combining the timeless character of natural sandstone with a refined architectural language, carefully considered proportions and an emphasis on exemplary craftsmanship.

Every aspect of the proposal is intended to celebrate quality, from the selection of traditional materials and considered detailing through to the creation of elegant, practical living spaces tailored to modern family life.

Alongside its architectural character, the house has been designed to meet highly efficient living standards, prioritising sustainability, energy performance and year-round comfort without compromising on the warmth and character expected of a country home.
