This is a little behind-the-scenes look at what happens between designing a garden and actually building it.

Taking a finished design back onto site, checking dimensions, levels, existing features and how everything works together in the real world.

💧 Sometimes the best solutions are already there…

With our climate changing and longer, drier spells putting increasing pressure on our gardens and water resources, we’re always looking at ways of making landscapes more resilient and less reliant on mains water.

On this project, what initially appeared to be an old cast-iron pump surrounded by a rather tired area of hardstanding turned out to be something much more useful – an existing well that our client hadn’t realised was there.

Rather than lose this piece of the property’s history, we decided to bring it back to life.

We carefully sourced reclaimed bricks sympathetic to the house, built up the original well to create a proper feature within the new landscape, and restored and reinstated the original cast-iron pump.

More importantly, we’ve discreetly taken an electrical supply and water connection into the well, allowing the possibility to install a modern pump below ground and supply a standpipe elsewhere in the garden. This will give the client a practical source of water for the garden without unnecessarily relying on mains water during increasingly long, dry periods.

Whether it’s an old well, rainwater harvesting or simply better water storage, there are often opportunities within our gardens to make much better use of the water already available to us.

A little bit of the past, repurposed for a more sustainable future. 🌿💧 ♻️
